In just a few months we’d be seeing Gabriel Cruz, Danny Blythe, Ian Crowe and, most importantly, Tommy Fortune on stage in Los Angeles. I couldn’t believe it — this would be the second time I got to see my favorite band live in concert.

The first show two years ago was amazing, but I felt like I’d appreciate it even more now — I’d changed a lot since then, and so had the band. The promo pictures I’d seen recently showed them in a different light, more grown up, a little more serious, and with a deeper sex appeal. I’d pre-ordered their new album and was waiting impatiently for whatever they had in store — along with the rest of the world.

She grabbed the phone out of my hand. “Shut up. How?”

“You laughed at me for joining the fan club, but they sent me an invitation to the pre-sale — it was only a ten-minute window of early access to the website, but that was enough! The entire tour is already sold out.”

“Where are our seats?”

“As close as my credit card would allow.”

“In honor of that,” Maya pulled my old CD case out from under her seat and started to flip through the discs, “we need to go back to the beginning.”

She slipped her choice into the dash and seconds later, the pop-rock beat of High Road Divide’s first album came blaring through the speakers.

Luckily, our attention is suddenly pulled to the front of the room. Gerard holds a microphone, greeting everyone and explaining how we’ll spend the next two days exploring London and Bath before traveling to our next stop.

“We have a brilliant tour guide, who will be with you along every step of this journey. Any issues that arise, or questions you may have, should be directed his way.” Gerard turns toward the opening doors. “Please say hello to my son, Kingston Hawthorne.”

Of course his name is announced at the precise moment I take a drink. I’m not exactly shocked to see him step into the room, but I’m certainly startled.

And accordingly, I do the worst thing possible—spray a mouthful of cider onto the back of Bridget’s blouse.

“Oh my God!” She whips around, glaring at me. “Did you…?”

“I’m so, so sorry,” I mutter, wiping my mouth like the uncivilized country girl I now very much feel I am.

About Why I Wrote this Book:

The concept for what would eventually become WEDNESDAY was one of those random ideas that popped into my head in February 2016. It was a Saturday morning—you know the kind where you’re still lounging in your pajamas, drinking coffee, and picking at breakfast several hours after waking? Yes, one of those. My kids were playing on the living room floor, my husband flipping through a magazine across from me. It was winter in Minnesota, which meant it was absolutely freezing out and we had no plans to go anywhere.

I grabbed my laptop and wrote out the blurb for a book I knew I had no time to write. I e-mailed it to my publicist and said, “What do you think about this idea?” Her response was enthusiastic, something along the lines of, “You need to write this book! Right now!” So I opened a blank document, and soon I had the beginning of a first chapter.

Because this project didn’t fit into my writing schedule (like, at all), I decided that I would continue writing the books I was supposed to in order to keep on track with my releases, but that I would write one thousand words a night on this book too, and just see where it took me. It was a hard couple of months, alternating between two projects—one I would write during the day in present tense, and this book in the evening after dinner, dishes, and bath time, in past tense. This book was basically written with the help of wine, my couch, and a good playlist, which I included for you at the end.

Chloe and Shaw didn’t even have names for the first several weeks. I didn’t outline or plot. I had no idea where the story was heading . . . I just had a haunted what if question in my head.

What if the man you’d grown up with, your lifelong best friend and secret crush, suddenly lost his wife? In what ways would his grief shape your new relationship? To what lengths would you go to be there for him?

Is it controversial? Inappropriate? Maybe. But love doesn’t have boundaries, and in telling this story, I let these heartsick, broken characters lead me. I knew they could find their happily-ever-after. And I also knew it would be a short story. Those were the only things I knew for sure.

I’m so glad that I stuck with it and spent all those evenings allowing their story to unfold. I hope you are too.

I love how it has the power of stealing your worries away, putting a smile on your face, and of course sometimes making you crush on fictional characters. If I can manage to do even one of those things for a reader, I will be a happy writer.

Publishing my debut novel, I’m Yours is the scariest thing I’ve probably ever done before. However, it is also by far the most exciting thing. I can only hope to become a better writer with each new book.

My beautiful girl (A Golden Retriever) is my sunshine all year around, but I still prefer Fall over any other seasons. Danishes, In&Out Burger, Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream, and Peanut Butter M&M’s will always stay as my guilty pleasures, and they can also double as bribes!

My head protested the abrupt movement as I less-than-gracefully jumped to my feet, brushing off the butt of my leggings with suddenly nervous hands. Who was Alan, exactly?

“Cassandra Ryan? I’m Alan Branding, security for Mr. Fortune.” He gave me a small smile and stuck out his hand.

Well, that answered that. A bodyguard. “Hi.”

We shook hands briefly, and then Alan offered me a car key. “Thomas — Mr. Fortune wanted to thank you again for the loan of your car.” He gestured to my hatchback. “We cleaned her up a bit, for your trouble.”

For the first time I actually looked at my car, and it did seem suspiciously shiny. Like… had it been waxed? I’d certainly never sprung for anything more than a basic carwash when it got too embarrassingly dirty, so this was a first. “Thanks.”

“There’s something for you on the front seat, as well.”

His words didn’t register at first. “What?”

Alan gave me another brief smile. “A more personal thank you, from Thomas.”

Curiosity nearly burned my already sweltering body to ashes right there in the parking lot. Tommy sent me a present?

Alan nodded, and I realized I’d spoken those words out loud. Shit.

I also noticed that Alan had abandoned the “Mr. Fortune” pretense, which was just as well considering he’d flubbed it every time he’d tried during our short conversations. It was strange to hear someone call him ‘Thomas’ but it seemed familiar in a way I liked. Maybe “Tommy” was more of a stage name, or maybe it was a little brotherly on Alan’s part. Either way, it sounded like they were close.

“Will you thank him for me?” I didn’t even know what the gift was, but did it matter?

A large black SUV pulled into the parking lot just then, and for a split second I hoped that Tommy would hop out of the back. But it merely glided up next to Alan, and he reached for the passenger-side door.

“I hope to see you again, Ms. Ryan. I’ll give Thomas your kind regards.”

The driver of the SUV, another man with short hair and a blazer, nodded at me with a tiny smile, and then they were gone.
