Despite knowing I just pissed my mother off by being half an hour late for curfew, I still can’t stop smiling. That kiss with Miller was worth it. I bring my fingers to my lips.

I’ve never been kissed like that. The guys I’ve kissed in the past all seemed like they were in a hurry, wanting to shove their tongue in my mouth before I changed my mind.

Miller was the opposite. He was so patient, yet in a chaotic way. It was like he’d thought about kissing me so often that he wanted to savor every second of it.

I don’t know that I’ll ever not smile when I think about that kiss. It kind of makes me nervous for school tomorrow. I’m not sure where that kiss leaves us, but it felt like it was a statement. I just don’t know what exactly that statement was.

My phone buzzes in my back pocket. I roll over and pull it out, then fall onto my back again. It’s a text from Miller.

Miller: I don’t know about you, but sometimes when something significant happens, I get home and think of all the things I wish had gone differently. All the things I wish I would have said.

    Me: Is that happening now?

Miller: Yes. I don’t feel like I was entirely forthcoming with you.

I roll onto my stomach, hoping to ease the nausea that just passed through me. It was going so well…

Me: What weren’t you honest about?

Miller: I was honest. Just not entirely forthcoming, if there’s a difference. I left a lot out of our conversation that I want you to know.

    Me: Like what?

Miller: Like why I’ve liked you for as long as I have.

I wait for him to elaborate, but he doesn’t. I’m staring at my phone with so much intensity that I almost throw it when it rings unexpectedly. It’s Miller’s phone number. I hesitate before answering it, because I rarely ever talk on the phone. I much prefer texting. But he knows I have my phone in my hand, so I can’t very well send it to voice mail. I swipe my finger across the screen and then roll off the bed and head to my bathroom for more privacy. I sit on the edge of the tub.

    “Hello?”

    “Hey,” he says.

“Sorry. It’s too much to text.”

“You’re kind of freaking me out with all the innuendos.”

“Oh. No, it’s all good. Don’t be nervous. I just should have said this to you in person.” Miller inhales a deep breath, and then on the exhale, he starts talking. “When I was fifteen, I watched you in a school play. You had the lead role, and at one point, you performed a monologue that went on for like two whole minutes. You were so convincing and you looked so heartbroken I was ready to walk onto the stage and hug you. When the play was finally over and the actors came back out onto the stage, you were smiling and laughing, and there wasn’t a trace of that character left in you. I was in awe, Clara. You have this charisma about you that I don’t think you’re aware of, but it’s captivating. I was a scrawny kid as a sophomore, and even though I’m a year older than you, I hadn’t quite filled out yet, and I had acne and felt inferior to you, so I never worked up the courage to approach you. Another year went by, and I continued to admire you from afar. Like that time you ran for school treasurer and tripped walking off the stage, but you jumped up and did this weird little kick and threw your arms up in the air and made the entire audience laugh. Or that time Mark Avery popped your bra strap in the hallway, and you were so sick of him doing it that you followed him to his classroom, reached inside your hoodie, and took off your bra and then threw it at him. I remember you yelling something like, ‘If you want to touch a bra so damn bad, just keep it, you perv!’ Then you stormed out. It was epic. Everything you do is epic, Clara. Which is why I never had the courage to approach you, because an epic girl needs an equally epic guy, and I guess I’ve just never felt epic enough for you. I’ve said epic so many times in the last fifteen seconds—I’m so sorry.”

He’s out of breath when he finally stops talking.

I’m smiling so hard my cheeks ache. I had no idea he felt this way. No idea.

I wait a few seconds to make sure he’s done; then I finally respond. I’m pretty sure he can hear from my voice alone that I’m smiling. “First of all, it’s hard to believe you were ever insecure. And second, I think you’re pretty epic, too, Miller. Always have. Even when you were scrawny and had acne.”

    He laughs a little. “Yeah?”

    “Yeah.”

I can hear him sigh. “Glad I got that off my chest, then. See you at school tomorrow?”

    “Good night.”

We end the call, and I don’t know how long I sit and stare at my phone.

You are ‘label-less’ in the fact that you write in several genres. Readers never know what to expect next. If someone asks, how do you label yourself?

When I self-published my first novel I had no idea what genre to put it in. I thought I had written a drama but it turns to that I had written a romance. I’ve learned a lot since then, but I still don’t put a lot of weight in genre when I write. When your best friend is begging you to read a book, it’s not going to matter what genre it is when someone you trust is passionate about the story.

To keep all of your stories and characters straight, you must be very organized.

I’m the most disorganized person you will ever meet! I have no schedule. I can’t wake up before nine in the morning. I probably don’t go to bed until like three in the morning. I usually work about 16 hours a day.

What happens if you get blocked when you are writing?

If I get stuck writing, I go for a drive and play music. Music really helps me plot. I love The Avett Brothers, X Ambassadors, Airborne Toxic Event…I could go on and on.

What can you tell readers about your latest release Regretting You?

I would spoil it if I told you about it! Most of my books are like that. I can’t say what they are about or it spoils it. But I can say that Regretting You is told from a dual point-of-view centered on the inner lives of both a teen and adult protagonist.

Sounds like lots of different types of readers will be interested!

Absolutely. I wanted to write a book that bridged the gap between young adult and contemporary romance so that mothers can read with their daughters. I think it’s exciting to see people sharing reading experiences.

So I have a secret… this is the very first Colleen Hoover book I have read! Shhhhhh… don’t go spreading this, I am legit afraid that I will be tossed out of the book community! I mean I have a ton of her books sitting on my kindle — but you all know how that TBR can get. I have no idea why I never cracked one of them open! Guess I am going to have to rectify that real quick!

Regretting You was a beautiful, emotional read. The story of what happens to a mother and daughter when their life is ripped apart. When the center of their universe is all of a sudden no longer there. How do you cope with loss when your rock is no longer there to hold you up? How do you go on and live each day when you are now questioning everything you know? When you find yourself wracked with guilt?

I absolutely loved how this book was dual POV, but not your typical dual view. It was told from both the perspectives of the mother, Morgan and the daughter, Clara. I felt that this gave us such unique insight into the dynamics of the family. It made me so attached to both characters as opposed to getting mad at one or the other if it had just been one of their views. I could see myself hating mom or hating the daughter if the book was one-sided because we wouldn’t be getting the whole story. Instead my heart ached and ached for them as I could completely understand and empathize with both of these beautiful, hurting women.

Books that deal with family always seem to resonate strongly with me. So it is no surprise that I loved this one. I read it cover to cover because I needed to see how everyone would turn out. I appreciated the imperfections in each character and how they helped to shape them and make them a truly three-dimensional character. I loved that they handled what happened to them in a way that just seemed real. Sometimes life just SUCKS. It really does. But it is how we react to that suckiness, how we find a way to move forward and begin to live again that makes a story beautiful. And that is exactly what this story is. A beautiful tale of how a family moves forward and learns to love again.

You should definitely pick up this captivating book.

“Do not think I won’t pick you up and throw you in my truck, head first and everything. I’m two seconds away.”

I stopped and stared at him.

Shit. He meant business. He was glaring at me with eyes that said, “Do not fucking fuck with me, you fucking twit.”

    Well. Then.

I sighed. I’ll try reasoning instead. “You’re going to drive me to your house, and then I’ll pack whatever I need and call a cab to take me all the way back to where I’m paying rent. It’s not worth it. Just let me grab a cab now.”

A savage curse bit out, and then his eyes flashed.

His singular warning had been when he told me he was two seconds away. In a flash, he grabbed me, and I was airborne, right into the back of his truck. But he wasn’t done. He leapt up, grabbing the seatbelt over me, and pulled it around me, clicking it in place. He had the door shut, locked, and he was already going around the front before I could even push myself upright and then start to reach for my seatbelt.

By then, he was inside, the engine on, and he shoved off into traffic.

    “This is stupid.”

“You’re right. You’re being stupid.” Cursing, he ducked down as a car sped past us. They knew he was driving because they came up on his driver’s side, their phones up and ready to go. It was a car full of teenage girls. “Dammit.”

    “Where do you live?”

He opened his mouth, then caught himself. His eyes narrowed in the rearview mirror. “Why?”

    I just smiled. “No reason.”

He continued to study me in between still watching the road, and with a soft growl, he shook his head. “I’m not buying it. What? You’re going to tell those girls who are trying to get a picture of me?”

“What’s the difference? I’ll know when you take me to your house. What’s stopping me from posting it on Twitter, or even posting your phone number?”

A litany of curses spewed from him, and the back of his neck was getting red. I was having a heyday with this. It was more fun than I could remember having in a long time.

Until he announced it, “I liked your mom.”

    “What?”

“Your mom.” He moved into the far lane, settling back.

I was thinking we had a bit of drive from here, and he settled an arm back on the passenger seat headrest.

“I always liked her. She made me cookies and muffins. And I remember when she tried to teach us to bake cakes from scratch. You were horrible and your cakes tasted terrible, but we’d lie to you. Both of us.”

“You did not—” But I was remembering, and even I hadn’t wanted to taste my cakes.

A tug at my mouth. “She’d wear that ugly yellow apron. She hated that apron.”

“What? I loved that apron. Always felt like it was sunshine. Made me feel warm, even in the winter.”

I noted softly, “That’s why she wore it. For you.”

His eyes lifted to the rearview mirror, holding mine a second again. He swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. “Yeah.” His voice came out raspy. “She was a good woman, and a good mom. She was a good wife. I could always tell.”

I snorted. “Why? Because she wasn’t wasting away like yours?” Then, I winced. That sounded even bitchier to my own ears, more than I thought it would be. “Shit. I’m sorr—”

“Because you guys laughed.” He kept on talking about my family, ignoring what I’d so blatantly pointed out about his own, his face hard. “My parents laughed when they were drunk, and only when they had a party. When there were other people there to laugh with, never the two of them, never the three of us. I was their only kid. I wouldn’t have known better except I half grew up in your home, too, and what I remember the most about growing up was that you guys laughed.”

    My throat burned.

“Yeah, we did.” I looked out the window. A hollow feeling starting to dig in my chest. “Until she died. We didn’t laugh much after that.”

    “You laughed until then?”

I nodded. I felt the chinks in my armor widening.

I remembered how he did adore my mom. The two acted as if they were conspiring together during our baking lessons, and any time he was in the house. He congregated around her. She congregated closer to him.

“You’re the son she never had.” Then, feeling bad about my shot at his mom, “Your mom cooked for us. I remember that one time she tried to teach us to make lasagna.”

He cracked a grin, barking a laugh. “You sucked at that, too. I never knew lasagna noodles could come out hard like rocks until yours.”

Fuck him, but I was grinning. I couldn’t help myself.

Those were good times, good memories before the shit ones came. And they came soon after that lasagna disaster.

He quieted. “It wasn’t the same. My mom versus yours. We had baking lessons at your house once a month, every first Sunday. My mom tried to teach us how to make Caesar salad, the only second cooking session she gave us, and that one we all got fine. It’s hard to screw up.”

“Says you. You’re perfect at everything.”

    He didn’t reply.

I didn’t expect him to. It was true. He knew it. I knew it. The entire nation knew it.

Then from him, “Not at being a friend.”

    My stomach kicked.

Hell no. No way. He wasn’t getting back in. No fucking way.

“Oh. God.” I groaned, throwing a hand up to hit my forehead. “Can we not? Can we save the dramatics until I’m able to call a cab to take me back to my place? For real. Enough bonding or whatever it is we were just doing.”

He growled, “You are such a goddamn bitch.”

I retorted, “And you are such a goddamn prick. Drop me the fuck off!”

    “With fucking pleasure!”

He gunned the engine, shooting forward in traffic, and weaving until we were nearing my exit. When he took it, I relaxed. The rest of the way was tense and silent, and I knew both of us couldn’t wait to be rid of the other. Then he pulled over to the curb. He didn’t make a move, his only action just unlocking the door.

His head was turned halfway to me, his jaw clenching over and over again.

    Fine.

I shoved forward, my head only swimming a little bit as I climbed out of his truck. Once I shut the door and turned around, he’d already hit the engine, tearing away from the curb.

I only had the clothes on my back, on the side of the street, but I’d never been so fucking grateful to be away from him.

Now, turning to the house I wasn’t sure I was still invited to live in, I saw that all the lights were off. Lovely.

    AHHHHHHHHH this book! THIS. Book!

Enemies by Tijan was everything I didn’t even know that I was looking for! It is (surprise surprise) an enemies to lovers, sports romance. Could you figure that out from the title and cover? LOL.

It was a sexy, passionate, emotional and bumpy ride that I didn’t want to put down. Seriously, I had to leave my kindle in another room so that I could actually get some work done and not be distracted by this addicting read! What are you doing to me Tijan? (PS can we let RVD know it is your fault I haven’t finished formatting her book? Just kidding… kind of…)

Dusty and Stone have a complicated history. They began as childhood BFFs but that friendship soon turned sour and the two only held hate for one another. Now Stone is the there to help pick up the pieces of a life falling down around Dusty. Will their hate turn into something more passionate?

I loved getting to see the feelings that existed between Dusty and Stone — whether it was anger, resentment, passion or love… they FELT it all. Watching them get through the barriers that kept them apart for all these years to rebuild trust was everything. I was rooting for them from the very beginning. I loved that they didn’t just go from enemies to everything is hunky dory but that there was a push-pull between them to the very end. And watching Dusty go from a solitary individual to slowly letting friends slip in and become a part of a tribe was so gratifying to see.

Enemies hit all of my sweet spots. It was steamy, had some hot football players, great friendships and it was unputdownable. This is a book that you NEED to add to your TBR — trust me you won’t regret it. It is a MUST READ!

No sooner had he gained the impact point than the strange glow faded, leaving darkness in its wake. He let his eyes adjust to the sudden change in light then set about attempting to locate the rock or piece of ice that had slammed into the earth.

Two steps ahead, he stumbled over something, lost his footing and flailed his arms, did a set of hops and staggers in order to keep his footing. “Damn and blast.” By the time he’d returned his attention to the offending object, he sucked in a breath. “What is that?” It was no rock or even a tree stump.

Lying in a shallow crater with the sides and dead grasses decorated with black scorched marks was a woman,  unconscious and dressed in a diaphanous garment of shimmering silver that sparkled in the faint light of the half-moon. The fabric moved with each breath she took.

“Bloody hell, she’s still alive!” His whisper sounded overly loud in the sudden hush of the park. But where was the shooting star, and what had that object been?

Her blonde hair lay in disarray about her head and shoulders. It fairly glowed with a light of its own, and as he stood staring down at her, that vibrancy faded too.

Sebastian glanced around the area. There was no indication that she’d arrived by way of a carriage and there certainly wasn’t another soul in sight who had possibly accompanied her. Where the deuce had she come from and what had brought her to this pass?

    Poke her, his wolf encouraged.

I won’t. He continued to peer at her. The woman didn’t move with the exception of her shallow breathing.

Kiss her, the wolf said instead.

Need slammed through Sebastian’s chest. She was certainly pretty enough and had curves to tempt a saint—and blast if every contour and shadow she possessed wasn’t on display through the sheer fabric of her gown. But he refused to accost a woman who lay unconscious. That I won’t do either.

She’s ripe for the plucking, and we haven’t had a woman in forever, his wolf was quick to remind him.

A sigh shuddered from him and he glanced away to the darkened trees even as his groin stiffened. I am aware, but I enjoy my bedmates livelier when I make love to them.

Which brought him back to his original problem. What to do about the woman who obviously required assistance or perhaps even medical help? Yet, she wasn’t his business. He didn’t know her, and if someone hadaccompanied her, no doubt they’d arrive on the scene soon, probably taking exception to his looming over her. And he didn’t need a bout of fisticuffs and bruises.

    Yet…

I cannot, in good conscience, leave her here.

Inside his mind, his wolf howled with laughter. You have no conscience, good or otherwise.

Be that as it may, I must render my assistance.

His wolf snorted. Are you playing at being a hero now? That’s not your usual mien.

Consternation and self-loathing knotted his gut. No, I can never claim that title, but I do have a bit of compassion and mean to use it now.

So saying, Sebastian knelt in the snow beside her. “Miss?” He touched her shoulder, which was warm; she hadn’t been exposed to the elements long. “Miss, can you hear me?” Giving her a little shake, he waited for a reaction.

She stirred, uttered a tiny sigh and then opened her eyes, which were gray, almost silver really, and seemed to hold a thousand secrets swirling in those depths. Then confusion filled them and she started upon focusing on his face. A shiver racked her body.

“Gentle, now. Easy,” he said in a soothing manner he’d used with skittish horses at his country estate. “No sudden movements until I can ascertain if you are unwell.” Again, he touched her shoulder and she gasped.

The woman shook her head. She stared up into the sky and put a hand to her ivory throat. The shimmering fabric of her gown showed off more of her body than it concealed, and Sebastian was hard-pressed not to stare that the hardened outlines of her nipples. “Where…? How…?” Her voice, melodious but scratchy as if from misuse, danced through the air before the wind snatched it.

Sebastian tried to quiet her as best he could. “You’ve apparently been in an accident of some sort,” he said in hushed tones with another look about the area. “Are you hurt?”

“Hurt?” she repeated slowly. Her delicate eyebrows scrunched together. “What is hurt?”

“I’m quite sure I don’t know unless you tell me.” Was the woman daft or had she injured her head in the accident? He swept his attention over her brow and temples, but there was no blood to indicate a blow. “Do you require assistance?”

“Assistance,” she again repeated with the same slow utterance as before, like she mulled over the words because they were unfamiliar.

“Do you speak English?” he asked instead. Perhaps she wasn’t from London at all and had difficulty with the language.

“Ah.” Her eyes brightened for a second before the concern, and was that pain, clouded them. “I think so, but I’ll require a few minutes to find out.”

Hellfire and damnation. What did that mean? Sebastian sat back on his heels. “I would caution you not to wait too long, for it is cold out here and you are not dressed for the elements.” He frowned, watching her face for signs of distress.

Where had she come from and who the devil was she? A shiver of something zipped down his spine. If she was lost and abandoned, what would happen to her?

Take her under your protection. She’s fine enough to become your mistress, his wolf suggested with a very beastly grin in his mind.

No. Sebastian shook his head. She doesn’t have that look. Did she? And he wasn’t in the habit of abducting random women to warm his bed. “Miss? I require some answers.”

Once he had her settled, he would continue on his own personal task of begging his own.

  • Blitzed by Alexa Martin

One of Buzzfeed’s 16 Romantic Books To Read This Fall
One of Popsugar’s Best Books for Winter

“Definitely a must-read!”—La La Anthony, New York Times bestselling author

Maxwell Lewis has to make the play of his life in order to breach the woman of his dream’s defenses in this new football romance from the author of Fumbled.

Brynn Larson owes a lot to reality television and professional athletes. Her bar hit new heights of success after becoming a local haunt for the Denver Mustangs players and their WAGs. Even if it’s Maxwell Lewis, whose shy smile makes her wonder what going on behind those beautiful brown eyes.

Maxwell knew from the moment he met Brynn that she was going to change his life. It was only a matter of time. But when he finally makes a move, fate conspires against him and everything goes wrong. Now he has to show her that their potential is real. Too bad for him, Brynn isn’t fooled by his glamorous NFL life, and when ghosts from both their pasts make a sudden reappearance, she must decide who she can trust. I was so excited to get my hands on Blitzed. I have devoured Alexa Martin’s first two books and couldn’t wait for more! And Blitzed definitely lived up to my expectations.

This was a slow burn romance that just worked so well. I love that Maxwell and Brynn built a solid best friendship before they dove into coupledom. For me, it made the whole story just work so much better. It meant when they hit those bumps in the road they had a foundation to fall back on. It meant them being mad and then them getting past it made perfect sense. They KNEW each other. They had background.

Maxwell… gotta love that strong silent type who knows how to let loose once he is with the one he loves. Man is he ever sexy! And Brynn. Brynn! That woman knows what she wants and she has created quite the world in her bar HERS.

The friendships that are represented in this whole series are FRIENDSHIP GOALS! I want to head on over to HERS and slip in the mix and see if they notice. I need friends like that who totally have your back and don’t just let you disappear into yourself.

Alexa Martin’s writing is so engaging. When I crack open one of her books I just lose myself in her words. I’ve said this before but it bears repeating: Alexa Martin’s books are the  perfect mix of fun, football, flirty, friendships and family sprinkled over with a dose of seriousness.

I want more. Do you hear that Alexa Martin? Please tell me you are giving us more!!!! I am NOT ready to leave this world!

  • Sunday Snuggles Under the Covers — Episode 1

Nothing beats a Sunday snuggled under the covers! But I thought I would mix it up here a bit and bring the snuggle session under some of the covers that I have designed!

Disclaimer: Some of the links below are affiliate links. This means, at no additional cost to you, I may earn a commission should you click through and make a purchase. I love all of these products, and you will too!

Kathy Coopmans wrote a beautiful and emotional trilogy — The Unbound Trilogy. She was looking for the covers to pack an emotional punch to match the reactions she was getting from early reviewers. We found this gorgeous couple on Depositphotos that matched Kathy’s vision of Logan & Ellie, well except for the tattoos!

For the fonts we decided to use Novecento Sans for Kathy’s name. For the USA Today line we used Adobe Garamond Pro. This would match the other covers that I have designed for Kathy and also be easy for people to read. The title for the three books was done with Black Diamond (which is a font I really like!) and we used TT Jenevers in the series title along with Black Diamond.

Unravel is the first book in the trilogy. For this cover I decided to crop the couple as a close-up to really highlight the emotion in their faces. I changed the color of her outfit to green because I didn’t want her in the same color on every cover! I applied a grunge filter to the photo and also darkened it up a bit to increase the angst factor of the cover.

Undone is the second book in this trilogy. On this one I also went in a little tighter on their faces, again for the emotion factor. Just like in the first one, I applied a grunge filter and darkened the photo up a little to keep the series looking similar. I changed the colors of both of their shirts and removed the tattoo on his arm.

Untwist is the last book in this emotional trilogy. Again I went in tight on the couple to match the first 2 books. I also positioned the photo a little off of the cover so that we didn’t have any man nips showing! (Many sites don’t like nipples and won’t approve ads with them!) I left their clothes as is for this one, but I removed the tattoos and necklaces from the man. Just like in the first 2 I applied a grunge filter and darkened the photo.

I may have been a little nervous sending these back to Kathy (I wanted her to love these covers as much as she loved her characters!) But, thankfully, she fell in love with the covers too! They matched her vision of the couple and showcased the raw emotion of the books. When you look at all 3 next to each other — there is no mistaking that these books belong together in a trilogy!

    (oooh that’s me! lol)

I waited ten years to grasp hold of a woman I knew was too good to be mine.

Back then, I had failed her. But I knew, somehow, someway, unknowingly to her, I’d find a way to make it up to her.

All the years in between, I watched her from afar. Keeping her safe, protecting her from the shadows that crept in the deep, dark of the night.

Then, out of the blue, she unraveled me with one sweep of her innocent little tongue.

The woman drew me straight toward all her light.

    Blinding.

    Intoxicatingly.

    Mine.

It didn’t take long for me to come undone. Fall in love and change the course of my life.

Ellie Wynn had untwisted me from leading a lifestyle that should have never been mine.

Then fate gave us a crash course about how not all good things come to those who wait.

    I’d failed her once again.

This time, her life is on the line.

I’m strung up because of it. I’m tumbling down because I should have known, the shadow that lurked in the night would steal her from me, in a blink of an eye.

And, now, I’m left to wonder how much can a person take before they break?

Is it possible to make up for the way we have hurt others?
I wonder if it truly is.

Can we undo what has already been done?
    No. We can’t.

I know for a fact, we cannot un-say words that have been bitterly spoken by a deliberate slip of a tongue.
    Words hurt.
    They sting.
    They burn.

The truth is, I didn’t want to hurt Ellie Wynn, but I knew I would.

She was a temptation I couldn’t resist. An addiction that lived in my blood, and I wasn’t about to go in search of a cure.

    Not when I needed her.
    Wanted her.
    Craved her.

There are no quick fixes to what I’ve done.
No pill to take away her pain.

All I have is the cold truth.

    It’s brittle.
    It’s brutal.
I’ll be damned if because of it, I let her slip away.

“Goddamn it, Ellie. I know you are up there. I’m not above breaking down this door. Please, it’s you I want and need, not Whitney. You have to believe me. It’s not what it seems.”

It is for me. It’s ingrained in my skull, pushing into my bones and it’ll probably live there forever.

“You were on top of her,” I whisper once more. Afraid if I speak louder, he’ll hear me. “You didn’t come after me. Worse, if she knows about me and you, then her brother does too.”

    Fear.

It sits like a pillow over my face. I am suffocating and smothering from it.

I can’t let fear take me over again. Always looking over my shoulder waiting for Shadow to catch up to me, but I can’t deny he’s out there plotting inside of his sick mind either. I can’t escape the threatening thoughts that Shadow will find me. They take up every square inch of my mind.

“I need to find my strength again.” It’s like it vanished into the air.

“Ellie, baby girl. Sit, and I’ll get you something to eat. Run you a bath, anything you want. You don’t have to talk to him, sweetheart. You owe him nothing. You owe yourself everything. Don’t you let that beautiful mind of yours take you back to that night, do you hear me? You are strong, a survivor.”

Renita is here. Oh, thank God. She must have caught the first flight home she could get.

I barely remember Norah calling her last night. The last thing I recall was our neighbor Eric helping me out of the car, and up the stairs and the minute my feet hit the landing, I ran to my bathroom, dropped to my knees and threw up. I sobbed while Norah held onto my hair and held me, and Eric apologized over and over that he thought I knew Logan was married. He carried me to bed, and I bawled into the crook of Norah’s neck until I couldn’t see through my bloodshot and puffy eyes.

“I’m sorry once again, Ellie.” I hear Eric as he continues to speak, but I’m not sure what he’s saying. It sounds distant and muffled.

    Panic.

It’s clawing up my chest and squeezing.

I clamp my eyes shut, my mind searching for anything to grasp hold of and hang on. I see nothing but the painful scars Whitney split open, and here I thought if I saw her again, I’d stand my ground and kill her.

I have to get out of here. I need to run far away.

Fear rushes through my veins, and a strange, intense sensation rises and slithers down my legs. I swallow hard, body shaking out of my control in a shroud of fear. What if Shadow knows where I am? What if he’s standing outside the door? What if he comes after me in the dead of night?

An invisible hand clasps over my mouth, and in an instant, I’m back to that night, the night where I was raped and beaten.

I gag, my skin itching to be clean. I recall how my body jarred with each dirty thrust that tore through me, how the pain seared through my skin and took away every feeling of safety I ever had.

    It was brutal.

    My death sentence.

That’s what it felt like, and I escaped it for so long. Now it’s back with a vengeance that rips right through my core of strength. Anxiety.

I can feel it constructing like a snowball in the pit of my stomach. Rolling and rolling as it grows into a giant ball that smashes against my insides and takes the air out of my lungs. It slams into my heart, building a wall that cages in dread, horror, and that ungodly emotion that never goes away. Terror.

I’m surrounded by these emotions. I can’t get away. Can’t claw my way out. They are uncaring and controlling and drowning me.

“Ellie, are you alright?” someone asks.

No. I’m not. I think I’m in the middle of a panic attack.

“Help,” I squeak, having no idea if anyone hears me or not—my legs wobble. Everything inside of me goes tight. I feel my ribs crowding as if bound by ropes, straining to inflate my lungs. My head is a container of disarray spinning and spinning and pushing my mind into blackness.

I want to run far away.

I turn to face Eric, Norah, and Renita, the three of them giving me sympathetic eyes.

“Help me; I can’t catch my breath. Oh, God. He’s coming. Shadow is coming.” Everything begins to spin, and it feels as if the ground is giving away under my feet. I collapse onto my hands and knees, my breathing shallow and quick.

Not long ago, I wondered how much more I could take before I broke. I’m breaking, and until Whitney and Shadow are both dead, I might never be able to put myself together again.

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.
