    Author: Jennifer Van Wyk
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Small Town Romance

    I’m The Other Guy.

No, it’s not what you’re thinking so calm down. And yes, I just dared to say the words “calm down”.

He’s the guy your mama warned you about.

I just so happened to be his number neighbor.

    Yeah, you read that right.

I’m the Textdoor Neighbor to the guy having one night stands with seemingly the entire town.

And I’m the lucky one who gets to “break up” with his not so lucky conquests.

Turns out, breaking up with most of them wasn’t as hard as I’d expected it to be.

    Until she came along.

I was content living my boring life, running a boxing gym and going home to an empty house.

She made me realize that maybe being content isn’t enough.

    I’m Jack Cole.

And this is the story about how I became… the other guy.

His hands move from my face, down my arms and around my backside where he grips me tightly and lifts. I wrap my legs around his waist as one of his strong hands holds tight to my butt and the other presses against the wall.

It’s not lost on me that those sweatpants are a friggin’ delight. Men should be mandated by law to wear them every day of their lives. Without anything underneath. I feel him harden against me and I swear it’s been so long since I’ve felt wanted that the combination of his strength and kisses and erection almost send me over the edge.

Kissing to orgasm in twenty seconds flat.

That’s something to be proud of.

But this is more than kissing.

    So much more.

It’s giving in to a desire that started burning a week ago when I saw him for the first time in my uncle’s bar. That only built as we spent time together. And when I left to go back to Jeff’s place, it was his face that I missed. His laughter and company.

A week is all it took for me to feel something for this man. It’s too soon for anything more than just a feeling but it’s something worthy of exploring.

And right now, I’m all about exploring.

From the Ground Up is Jennifer’s first published novel, with the hopes of many more to come. Author: Lynn Jaxon
Genre: Contemporary Romance; Second Chance Romance

They say if you set something free and it comes back to you, it was meant to be. For Mitch and Jayna, what happens when the one you have never been able to forget is suddenly right back in the middle of your world?

    Mitch
I believed in love once…until I saw how it only caused heartache and pain. Watching my dad break after losing my mom was more than I could process. Then feeling forgotten by the girl I thought would always be there for me was too much. I let her go, erecting a wall around my heart. Being a divorce lawyer is a daily reminder that I did the right thing. Have fun, but don’t allow anyone to get too close. It was working out just fine. At least until my past found its way back to me.

    Jayna
He was the love of my life, my forever. When we attended different colleges, I thought our devotion was strong enough to handle the distance, but he said we should take a break, telling me it was for my own good. It was so hard to forget him, but I finally did, and even thought I had moved on. Now, years later, I again see the man I’ve never once stopped loving, only he’s not the same. Those old feelings have come crashing back in, now all I can do is hope that I’ll one day find my Mitch.

Will the promise they once made remain true? Can Mitch and Jayna find their way back to each other and rekindle the flame they thought would never extinguish? Or has time and distance changed them both?

I don’t take the time to turn on light switches and neither does Sierra. Instead, we fly down the hallway, dropping our coats along the way. I push through my bedroom door, the knob hitting the wall with a loud thwack but it could punch a hole in my sheetrock for all I care. I can fix it later. Right now I have better things to worry about. She flips on the light as she follows and murmurs, “I wanna see.”

“Good. Because I plan on staring at you for a while.”

    “A while?”

    Hours.”

“Oh my,” she breathes and starts stripping off her clothes. I stop her, wanting to do it myself but she bats my hands away, ripping her cardigan off and tossing it behind her. She shakes her head, her long dark hair swishing around her. “You do you. I’ll do me. This time. I don’t have the patience to wait longer.”

I grin and whip my shirt off as she undoes the button on her jeans, watching in amusement as she tries to simultaneously remove her shoes and skintight pants at the same time. She falls on the floor with a thud but it doesn’t stop her mission. She quickly unzips the side of her boots, kicks them off then wiggles out of her jeans while I finish undressing as well.

She works off her tank top and is standing before me, chest heaving in only a bra and underwear. There’s nothing particularly sexy about them. A black cotton bra and pink panties with black polka dots. For some reason, the simple combo does things to me. Way more than if she were in some skimpy lingerie that didn’t match who she is. I like the fact that top to toe, Sierra is who she is and she doesn’t feel the need to change that in front of me.

    “You’re gorgeous.”

“You’ve seen me in less,” she reminds me.

    “Yeah, but that was different.”

“How so?” she asks, walking to me. She lays soft hands on the bare skin of my waist and I swear I feel a zip of electricity shoot up my spine.

She presses her lips to my chest and I let my forefingers slide under her bra straps. “Because then, we were friends.”

    “We aren’t friends now?”

I can tell she’s both teasing and nervous when she asks. She wants me to admit to liking her more than friends just like I want to admit it.

“I’m not a one and done guy, Sierra. This? It’s real for me.”

The entire apartment was dark—silent. Aside from the buzzing of the fridge in the kitchen, there was no sound. I pocketed the key and felt against the wall for the light switch, flipping it on and shutting the door quietly behind me. The living room lit up, blinding me momentarily. I looked around, seeking for some sign of Carter, but the house was still. Just as expected, the place was spotless. Over the suede chaise sofa laid a hand-woven quilt, the quilt I’d made him during my long-ass, torture-filled summer at camp without him. The coffee table in front of the couch was tidy, only flaunting a few stacked magazines and an Aloe Vera plant. The apartment was clean—cleaner than my place had ever been, which was typical for the two of us.

“I’m coming up,” I hollered at the stairs. “I hope you’re decent.” I waited for some reaction; some grumbled reply or sleepy bitch-out. Instead, there was silence—a silence that chilled my core. “I know you’re here. I saw your car by the curb.” Trying to ward off the dizzying effects of my hangover, I climbed the stairs one at a time, giving Carter enough time to fully wake before I reamed his ass for hanging up on me. “It’s your fault I’m not sleeping right now,” I said. My head pounded, my vision fuzzy as exhaustion overcame me. I stopped in front of his door and let my hand rest on the handle, pushing it open. “I may very well kick you out of bed and—”

There was silence, an eerie, terrifying silence that seemed to freeze time. In that silence, someone started to scream. For a fleeting second, I wanted to cover my ears and yell at them to shut up: grow up, be quiet, get the fuck out. Shut the fuck up.

Then I realized it was me.

I spotted the bottle of pills first, a neon orange prescription bottle lying open on the floor. The lid was off, and it was empty. Next to the empty bottle of pills, he was there.

With a sob, I dropped to my knees in front of him. I could hear my breath coming in quick, short gasps of panic as I reached out and allowed my trembling hand to feel for any sign of life. His lips were tinged blue, his eyes partially open and staring at the ceiling above us. His skin, at one time running so much warmer than everybody else’s, was cooling down. Chilled and waxy.

“No,” I screamed the word until it hurt my throat. “I don’t understand what’s happening. I don’t understand what’s happening. Carter? Carter. Tell me—tell me what’s happening. Carter!” I collapsed onto him, letting my head rest on his chest. “I need to call 911,” I murmured. Jumbled thoughts raced through my mind, none of them making a bit of sense. I pulled my cell phone from my pocket and dialed the emergency line. My hand shook so severely I dropped the phone twice.

“It’s okay,” I said to Carter. “They’ll be able to help you.”

“911, where’s your emergency?” asked the operator on the other end of the line. I touched my face, only just noticing the tears rolling down my cheeks.

“My friend,” I said. I reached down and squeezed Carter’s hand. “He’s-h-e needs help. I need an ambulance. We’re in the Kirkwood Meadows apartments, number sixty-one.”

“I’m sending Paramedics now,” the dispatcher said. “Ma’am, can you tell me what happened?”

“No. I don’t know. I just-I need someone to come and help him. I need someone to come and save his life and I—” The cell phone dropped from my fingers. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I heard it clatter to the floor, bouncing against the hardwood floor of his bedroom. I reached for him again, resting my hand on his, our temperatures clashing. I could feel my face and fingers start to tingle and numb, threatening a panic attack.

“It’s going to be okay,” I said, lacing my fingers together over his chest. I began compressions, holding my breath, as the seconds ticked by in slow motion. I paused for a moment and checked for a pulse. There was nothing. “I love you, Carter,” I whispered, pumping his chest again. “I’m so sorry, just stay with me. They–they’ll help you.” Then, in the silence of the house, amongst the midst of death, I lost it.

After a few minutes, regaining my composure, I walk back out into the lobby. I look up, seeing the man I’ve spent years missing, the pain so deep there aren’t words to express it. But as I look closer, it’s not the same man. This one’s face is contorted in anger, eyes seemingly dead, spewing hateful words at the poor woman in front of him. Backing behind a column, I can’t help but listen.

“What the fuck are you doing at my office? I told you, it was just one night. Don’t call me. Don’t text me. Don’t write me a letter. You got off. I got off. We’re even.”

“Why are you being so mean? I thought we had something,” she cries, wiping tears from her face.

“You knew the deal going in. I do believe my words to you were, ‘Baby, this is just a one-night rodeo.’ I’m sorry if you don’t understand English.”

“You’re such an asshole!” she says, spins on her heel, and stomps out the door.

What the hell? How can this be the same man I once thought hung the moon?

I storm around the column and look at him with disgust. “What the hell was that? I can’t believe what I just witnessed. How could you be so mean?”

Mitch smirks and shrugs. “I’m not the same man I was all those years ago, Jayna.”

“No shit.” I grab our coffee, which no longer has the appeal it did a few minutes ago, and stride to the elevator just as the doors open, Mitch following.

“You’ve got a quick mouth on you, Ellie. I like it. It makes me wonder what else it can do.”

The intensity grows in his eyes while his words hit me between my thighs.

    Throbbing.

The night he brought me here, he melted my panties. Tonight, no matter how much he tries charming me, they won’t be coming off.

    “You’ll never know.”

    “We both know I will.”

    No, he will not.

“Speaking of having a quick mouth. Here’s something you can chew on and swallow. I won’t submit to anyone. If I want you, I’ll have you. If I don’t, I won’t. You, you’re a…”

Shit. I can’t even force the word, and I refuse to bend to his patronization. Him trying, pours more gasoline to the raging fire burning within.

“A male whore? Is that what you’re trying to say? I was one, Ellie. I haven’t been in almost a year.”

Possessiveness surges. Hard and heavy that it consumes my mind. I want to punch every woman he’s had before me. It’s a crazy notion when I don’t even know this man.

Logan takes hold of my hand that’s dangling at my side and drops a kiss across each of my knuckles, dancing eyes searching mine. His touch is soft, familiar, intimate, and my skin tingles where his lips graze.

“I sense there’s more your gorgeous mouth would like to say to me. Perhaps go to hell? Fuck off? Maybe what the hell is going on? Why was I at a dance club the night I brought you here and had the best sex of my life when I could have been at my club? Would you like to know what I’d like to say to you?”

No, I really wouldn’t. The man already has my mind traveling back in time. Right back to ten years ago.

“I’d like to tell you to get on your hands and knees, to spread those sweet thighs, pull my hair when I bury my tongue in between them. I’d like to know if our night together was as good for you as it was for me. I love to tell you to scream; only this time saying my name when I make you come.”

I roll my eyes and swallow, pressing my thighs together as memories of him asking me to do all but the last assault me in the spot his intention wanted to hit.

Logan Mitchell, I knew the name, but on him, I like it—Bossy, sexy, overly confident, dangerous.

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

    Matzah Ball Surprise

    Title: Matzah Ball Surprise
    Author: Laura Brown
    Genre: Contemporary Romance

This Passover is starting to feel like the ten plagues might be coming back to haunt them before the weekend is over…one hilarious misstep after the next.

Gaby Fineberg just wants to get through Passover Seder without her “well meaning” family playing matchmaker. She needs a date, just for one simple meal—that includes singing, the history of her forefathers, and not one bit of yeast. The hot guy at her gym would be perfect. He probably hates bread, anyway, with a body like that. But when she finally works up the nerve to ask him…he doesn’t hear a word she said.

Levi Miller is deaf and happily single. Initially, he doesn’t know why this beautiful woman is talking to him, but it’s clear she needs help—and suddenly so does he. In a very complicated situation, Levi finds a simple solution. Gaby will pretend to be his new girlfriend to bail him out, and he’ll return the favor. But he didn’t bargain for a family dinner quite like this one…

He held up a thumb—no skin off his back—and eyed the new app on his phone. He switched to Gaby’s message thread.

Levi: Can you test something out for me? My friend gave me a new speech-to-text app to try, but I have no clue how well it works yet.

Gaby read, then looked at him and nodded. He opened the app, waited for the program to load, then showed it to Gaby. She bit her lip, eyes flickering upward in thought, and all he could focus on was that plump bottom lip dented by teeth.

He really wanted a taste. Could that be part of the ploy?

She started speaking, and thinking dots appeared on his app. He waited for words to show up, but nothing did.

Gaby had stopped, and he held up the empty screen to her. She frowned, then held the phone closer to her mouth, speaking again, and he got transfixed by those lips again, until words appeared on the blank app screen and forced his attention to shift.

    Let’s see…not sure…what food…lucky as fucking.

Levi blinked, then blinked again. What the hell? He stopped paying attention to the app, looking at Gaby, whose lips still moved as if she talked about the sky, not…

He swallowed, the off handed suggestion crawling under his skin. But it couldn’t be right. Could it?

She stopped talking, eyebrows lowered, and he turned the phone for her to see. Her gaze roamed over the screen, then her lips burst open and curved and her shoulders shook. She leaned forward, laughing hard enough her cheeks turned pink.

    So, she didn’t say fucking.

Gaby collected her phone, shoulders still bouncing as she typed.

Gaby: Wow, that program is bad, huh? I didn’t know what to say so I mentioned food. I believe that was the “we’ll have turkey not stuffing” line. While turkey can be lucky, I don’t put it on par with fucking. Chocolate, maybe, but not turkey.

He made the mistake of locking eyes with her. Something simmered below the good humor, and thoughts of chocolate and Gaby and very little clothing filled his head.

He closed the app. Time to focus on their mission.

I was beyond excited when I saw that there was a romance coming out that incorporated Passover as a main theme in the book. In fact, I may have squealed and shot off a rambling email saying that I NEEDED the book right now! LOL.

Passover is my favorite holiday ever. It incorporates all my loves: tradition, history, memory, community, family, story, and song. And now I finally get to read a book that takes place at the Passover seder in my favorite genre — romance! Thank you so much, Laura Brown, for this gem of a romcom. I truly hope to see more books like this from you in the future!

Matzah Ball Surprise is a fun and flirty read. This romcom hits all those great spots… wit, laugh out loud moments, and believable characters that you could see sitting down and sharing a meal with.

Gaby needs a date to her family’s seder (ceremonial meal to celebrate the start of Passover) in order to get them off her back. So she decides to ask the hunk that she has been ogling while she works out. She gathers up the courage to ask him to be her fake date (what a fun trope!), but… he doesn’t hear her. Levi, it turns out, is deaf. Let the fun and shenanigans ensue as this unlikely pair try to fool Gaby’s family for the holiday.

I loved how Laura Brown seamlessly integrated both Levi being deaf and the Jewish holiday into the story. Neither seemed like just a prop or setting… both were integral to the story itself. I could just imagine how easy it would be to feel like an outsider at a seder when conversation and songs flow around the table the entire time. I appreciated how this experience with his fake date’s family made him appreciate his own family that much more. I think it is so natural for us as humans to focus on what isn’t right, what could be better, that we sometimes don’t appreciate how good we have it.

The characters in this book were great. I loved how their imperfections made them so much more realistic. From our main couple to the family and friends they were surrounded by. These were characters you could imagine bumping into in your own life. And can we talk chemistry? Gaby and Levi had it in spades! I couldn’t wait for them to rip off each other’s clothes and realize how good they truly were together.

I found Matzah Ball Surprise to be a delightful read. One that I can see myself re-reading next year just in time for Passover! I am hoping (begging) that we can see some of the side characters get their own story (I would love to see books with Meyer, Monica & Izzy!)

After spending her childhood coming up with new episodes to her favorite sitcoms instead of sleeping, Laura Brown decided to try her hand at writing and never looked back. A hopeless romantic, she married her high school sweetheart. They live in Massachusetts with their two cats and son. Laura’s been hard of hearing her entire life but didn’t start learning ASL until college, when her disability morphed from an inconvenience to a positive part of her identity. At home the closed captioning is always on, lights flash with the doorbell, and hearing aids are sometimes optional.

  • The Second Time Around by Jessica Prince ~ Release Blitz

    Title: The Second Time Around
    Author: Jessica Prince
    Series: Hope Valley
    Genre: Contemporary Romance

Tessa Day had clung to the notion of a once-in-a-lifetime love for as long as she could remember. Then, one chance encounter led her to the man of her dreams. After a whirlwind romance that could only be described as something out of a fairytale, she gave her heart to her other half, only to have him throw it back like it meant nothing.

Bryce Dixon was known as the care-free funny guy with a heart of gold. But it was all a façade. For more than ten years, he’d been holding on to guilt that was slowly eating him alive. He blamed himself for things in his past, and as punishment for his sins, he walked away from the only woman he’d ever loved.

But when Tessa shows up in Hope Valley, Bryce begins to think that maybe he’s been given a second chance. However, when danger comes calling, he soon discovers he’s in for the fight of his life. It had been three days since I last saw Bryce in person. He’d gone out of town for a case he was working on, which meant I went from having him constantly to not at all, and although he’d gotten back earlier this morning, I had no real reason to call and ask him to come by my place later tonight. No matter how badly I wanted him with me.

Now I was running on fumes. Two nights he’d slept by my side, and already, I’d become addicted to having his big, strong body wrapped around mine.

These past few nights I hadn’t been able to sleep to save my life. I spent each of them tossing and turning, feeling like something was missing. Something in the form of a six-foot-four man with more than two hundred pounds of pure muscle packed beneath his skin.

After how he broke my heart, he was the last man on earth I should crave. But, he made me feel . . . safe. For the first time in my life, when I’d needed someone I hadn’t been alone. Someone had taken care of me. Bryce had taken care of me, and he’d done it better than I could have imagined. Gentle and kind, sweet and loving. Anticipating my every need.

    Like a husband.

My protective wall was in shambles, full of holes, and barely standing. I missed him like crazy. The only silver lining was that he’d stayed in contact while he was gone.

Like an addict, I’d kept my phone in hand, reading and rereading the string of texts between us every few minutes over the past three days. And it had to be said, Bryce Dixon was just as potent over text as he was in person. The man was good with words.

Hope Valley is really the place to live! Gorgeous men who know how to treat their women seem to be swarming this small town! Think there is an open house there for me?

Seriously though, The Second Time Around is another great read from Jessica Prince in this fabulous series of interconnected standalone books. I am a sucker for second chance romances, and this book didn’t disappoint.

This was a sexy, emotional read you won’t want to miss!
