        If only she hadn’t been so curious.  But that had always been a flaw of hers, and her mother had warned her that it would get Jane into trouble one day.  Well, today was that day.  Down in the huge barrel were guns.  Not just any guns, but fully automatic weapons without any kind of serial numbers to identify them by.  Jane gulped loudly and started backing away.  Maybe she could leave and forget that any of this ever happened.

    Her hopes were dashed aside as the back door creaked open loudly and two bulky men in suits stepped outside, glaring at her and especially the camera in her hand.  Realization hit Jane that the men thought she was taking pictures of the guns.  It would probably be best if she handed them the camera, explain that she was just sight-seeing, and then leave.  Instead, she ran.

    Putting every ounce of energy she had into her legs, Jane pumped them as fast as they would go, but the two men breathed down her neck, making the hairs stand on end in fear.  Large arms grabbed her around the waist and brought her down to the ground with an oomph.  As she lay still gasping, trying to catch her breath, Goon #1 grabbed her arms and hauled her roughly to her feet.  Pulling away from the man as hard as she could, Jane kicked out at him, connecting with his shin.  He grunted in pain as his eyes became bloodshot and watery.  Goon #2 watched for a moment with mild amusement before pulling out a switch blade.  The click of metal made Jane pause and watch the long blade spring into sight.  The edge glinted in the remaining rays of sunlight, inciting a fear in her heart that made her legs suddenly feel like jelly.

    “Please don’t hurt me,” she stammered.

    The goons grinned and laughed as Goon #2 brought the blade up to her face, nicking her cheek just enough to draw a line of blood to the surface along with a burn to her skin.  The man came close enough that Jane could smell the whiskey on his breath.  He whispered in her ear, “You’re a pretty hot mess.  Want to know what we do to unsuspecting women that come into our territory?”

    After another brutal session with Dr. HappyFeelGood, I lay back in my hospital bed, my eyes searching out the city below, wondering what life outside might be like now.

    It’d only been two years. Two fucking years.

    It seemed insignificant and insurmountable at the same time.

    It wasn’t like I was one of those coma patients who awoke after decades and found the entire world completely altered— family and friends dead or aged beyond recognition— with an entire lifetime of history behind them.

    Two years really wasn’t that long— a couple of iPhone upgrades. Maybe a few missed holidays. But for someone who’d been asleep for those twenty-four months, I wondered just how much I’d missed. My fingers itched to turn on the television, to binge watch the news and late night TV. But I had been instructed not to do so.

    “Only research the time you lost for now,” the doctor had instructed.

    Why? I had no idea. Probably to keep my weak, fragile brain from overloading. The way everyone tiptoed around me in here, that seemed a real possibility. Like I was a recently found nuclear bomb no one knew how to diffuse. The nurses and doctors all spoke in hushed tones when they entered my room, as if anything louder than a whisper might set me off into some deranged fit. Hell, even the woman who brought in my food looked fearful of me.

    Was I that much of a freak?

    Didn’t people wake up from comas all the time?

    I guess not.

    I knew I was a rarity. I understood the situation was unique and they were treading in uncharted territory when it came to treating me, but it still hurt.

    The loneliness. My solitary life.

    I was a man brought back from the brink of death to what? Usually you read these amazing stories of coma patents waking up to be reunited with their families… wives and loved ones.

    I had no one.

    Nothing but a box of memories I didn’t understand.

    This is a toughie! If she hadn’t I wouldn’t have thought any less of her. But I respect her for putting aside her feelings and helping him out. I know that couldn’t have been easy!

    Do you have memories you would choose to forget if you could?

    So I won’t lie, there are times when I am feeling down and I allow myself those few moments to wallow in my feelings that memories become a little too much. At those moments I have wished I could forget the memories, forget the emotions, the feelings, the EVERYTHING that goes along with them. But as soon as I take a deep breath (or two, depending on the day 😉) I realize it is those very memories that have shaped who I am today. with all the pain and heartache that they may bring – they make me, ME! And I am proud of who I am!

    Have you ever experienced a secret like Everly talks about – one that digs its way into your soul?

    I have never been in the same position as Everly. And I tend to be a pretty open and honest person. However… (isn’t there always a however or a buttttttttttttttt) part of her secrets are the ones she is keeping from herself. The truths she is refusing to acknowledge. And THAT is something I can most certainly relate to. Denial is NOT a river in Egypt.. it is something I live with constantly. So while on one hand I am an extremely realistic person who faces things head on… there is that flip side that lives deep inside of me that harbors the secrets I’m not ready to admit. The truths I am not yet ready to face.

    I saw him again today.

    It was at the mall this time.

    He was wearing a grey suit and it was just seconds this time before he disappeared around a corner and my life returned to normal once more.
