Colin’s words pierce my heart, sending rivers of fear coursing through me. The room tilts and I struggle to catch my breath. “H-how did they find out?”
“I’m sorry, Ev, they had these electric prod things. I just wanted it to stop.”
“Oh, Colin, I’m so sorry. None of this is your fault.”
Bile rises up the back of my throat, and I’m afraid I’m going to be sick. I cup my hand over my mouth and crawl to the corner to dry heave. Drenched in sweat, I push up, my limbs trembling. It’s not the first time I’ve faced death, but my friends are now in danger, all because I needed to see that stupid bombed out power station in the Ruins. Pushing up on shaky legs, I pace the small room, forcing myself to think things through. We can’t stay here and just let them kill us. I won’t let them kill Colin.
“We have to get out of here, I don’t know how, but we have to figure something out,” I mumble, thinking out loud as I burn another lap.
Colin turns his swollen face toward me. “How’d you escape in the Ruins?”
“The guy was stoned and drunk, couldn’t even walk a straight line. I outmaneuvered him.” I glance around the room again, dredging my brain for any idea. “How many guys does Walker have here?”
“I saw three, but they all have guns.”
Yeah, I figured they’d be armed, but there must be something we can do. Guilt pushes me to search for a way to at least get Colin out. Although he won’t agree to leave me behind, which means either we both escape or we both die. Colin shifts his position, letting out a long groan, reminding me he’s not in any shape to help me with whatever plan I come up with. When the door opens, I rush to Colin’s side, determined to keep them from separating us.
Shaggy sticks his head in the door. “Where’s your tablet?”
“I forgot it.”
He swears loudly and slams the door. What the hell’s the big deal about my tablet?
Oh…
It has this address in my text messages. That’s why they told me to bring it.
The start of a plan begins to take shape. It’s not much, but I think I know how we might be able to escape.
I turn to Colin. “So, this is what we need to do.”
