ALJackson-WaitBookCover5x8_BW_HIGHFrom NYT & USA Today bestselling author comes a new Bleeding Stars stand-alone novel…

She is his strength and he is her weakness. And this time he won’t let her go.

    Edie Evans is gorgeous.

    Sexy.

    Kind.

She’s also the definition of off-limits.

But that didn’t stop me from sneaking into her room to comfort her at night.

But guys like me? We destroy everything, so it should have been no surprise when I destroyed us, too.

The night I sent her running, I thought I’d never see her again.

Until I saw her standing like a vision in the crowd.

    Austin Stone is dangerous.

    Alluring.

    Tempting.

He broke my heart and I refused to give him the chance to do it again.

It’s been years since I’ve seen him, and now I can’t do anything but stare at the gorgeous, tattooed man playing onstage. I should run. I know I should. But like a fool, I run straight back to him.

    Our desire is overpowering.
    Our need unrelenting.

    She is my hope.
    He is my weakness.

We should have known a passion this intense would burn us right into the ground.

    “Edie…please…just…wait.”

I gripped the railing as if it might propel me forward. Instead, my footsteps faltered and slowed. I stood facing away, my back heaving as his consuming presence swarmed over me from behind.

“Please.” This time it was a whisper. A plea.

    Sincere.

    Slowly I turned.

    Drawn.

    He’d always been my weakness.

Austin stood at the end of the walkway, just outside the reach of the lights, his body obscured in shadows.

Even larger than I’d imagined when I’d first seen him up on stage.

    So foreign.

    So familiar.

My heart ached. Because I was looking at the boy who’d been my best friend. The one person who I’d thought would completely understand. One who wouldn’t judge or make it hurt more than it already did.

    He’d been my safety.

    My haven.

Until he’d dragged me right back into hell.

“Why are you here?” My words cracked. “H-h-how…how did you find me?”

I saw the shake of his head, and he took a single step forward, out of the shadows and into the glow of the single lamp attached high on the exterior wall that lit the way.

It hit him like a spotlight.

    The boy was so beautiful.

It was a threatening kind of beauty, a whorl of mystery and pain, sharp lines and corded muscle.

It almost dropped me to my knees.

He fisted his hands at his sides. The question was strained, hard as it pressed from his mouth. “You believe in fate, Edie?”

Old grief I’d bottled for so long burst. It came out as some kind of maniacal cry. Incredulous. Oozing disbelief. “After everything that happened…that’s what you’re going to ask me?”

    “Edie…I—”

“Do you have any idea how badly you hurt me?” I cut him off, my own hands fisting as I took a single step forward.  “The damage you caused? Careless words, Austin. So fucking careless, thrown out there without a single thought to the repercussions, without any consideration of how they would affect me. How they would change my life. You promised.” My brow twisted with the accusation. “And now you have the nerve to stand there and ask me if I believe in fate?”

I swallowed hard, shook my head. “You can go to straight to hell, Austin Stone.”

He laughed, but there was zero humor behind it. “Come on, Edie. You can do better than that, can’t you? Considering you know hell is where I’ve been all along, and you and I both know I deserve so much worse. And yeah…those words were reckless, but you know they weren’t heedless. You couldn’t expect me to just stand there. Not with him. Not with what he was saying. Implying. I couldn’t.” The last cracked on the emphasis.

I felt as if every cell in my body was being crushed. Squeezed so tight there was no chance but for everything to implode.

“And because you lost it, I lost it all. You. My home. My future.”

His big hands fisted. “I know. I…I fucked it up, Edie. Warned you, I always fuck it up.”

But what he failed to say was he’d promised he wouldn’t fuck it up with me.

I couldn’t tell if I was relieved or terrified when Jed suddenly rounded the corner. His sister, Blaire, was hot on his heels.

“Edie,” Jed gushed out in relief when he saw me. He came to a stop a few steps behind Austin.

As if he’d just stepped into the bristling intensity and it tripped up his feet.

    The stand-off.

    The war.

Austin standing there? I knew that’s exactly what this was going to be.

“What the hell is going on here?” Jed demanded. His voice twisted into a threat. He glared at the back of Austin’s head, worried eyes flicking to me, hardening when they snapped back to Austin.

Blaire tugged at his arm. “Jed…I told you to give her a minute. Sometimes you need to let people sort out their own issues.”

Jed just grunted and shrugged off her arm.

    Refusing to budge.

Austin swung his head to look behind him. When he did, his face shifted to the side, all those hard, beautiful lines exposed in profile, his expression winding into a bitter sneer. “Nah, man. All’s good here. Just telling an old friend hi. Isn’t that right, Edie?”

    Aggression curled between them.

    Alive and raging.

Jed was a burly, beefy, hulk of a man, a full beard covering most of his face, his brown hair cut short at the sides and longer on top.

Had I ever imagined him and Austin going toe to toe, I would have put all my money on Jed.

    Now I wasn’t so sure.

Jed lifted his chin, as if for the moment he was standing down, turning to me as his tone softened. “You okay, Edie?”

    I nodded. “Yeah, I’m okay.”

    Lie. Lie. Lie.

I was shaken to my core.

“I just want to go home.” It left me on a desperate breath.

Jed pushed around Austin and stalked my way. “All right, let’s get you out of here.”

As she passed by Austin, Blaire cast a searching glance in his direction, before her attention flickered over to me, a ton of worried questions moving across her expression.

Questions I didn’t know if I had the strength to answer.

With an arm wound around my shoulder, Jed spun me, breaking the spell Austin had me under, and tucked me into his side.

    Protecting and shielding.

He began to lead me away, down the planks and toward his car waiting in the parking lot out front.

With each step we took, I could feel the heat of Austin’s stare. That burning intensity I wasn’t sure I could ever escape.

    The hurt and hatred.

It was a hatred I couldn’t tell who it was directed at.

If it was aimed at him or me or the rest of the world that had threatened to choke the life out of us.

The world we were supposed to take on together.

Just as we started to round the corner, I paused because I just couldn’t stop myself, turned to look back at the man who stood there staring back at me.

Emotion gripped his expression just as tight as the clench of his fists.

    Hard and tortured.

As if I was the one inflicting the pain.

I choked down the sorrow that rose like a cyclone, spinning and spinning, whipping up the old affection that longed for that soft, understanding boy to take me in his arms and sing in my ear.

    Dangerous.

I searched inside myself for the shelter that secured my heart. The flimsy cover I wore that just barely kept me together. I forced myself to speak the words I knew would drive him away, as much of a lie as they were. “And for the record…no, Austin, I definitely don’t believe in fate.”

  • Born Sinner AMAZON

Twenty-two years ago, I was cut from a cold, sodden womb, and cradled in the filth and poverty of Chicago’s concrete arms. Statistically, I wasn’t supposed to survive these streets past the age of eighteen.

    Fate had a different plan.

I was bred for one purpose and one purpose only: to unleash death and destruction on my world.

    My thoughts are power.

    My words are weapons.

Evil created me then grace tried to save me. But first… they tried to kill me.
They call themselves the Se7en. They are sin and salvation, and everything we’ve feared from the beginning of time. And their leader is the deadliest of them all.

    He doesn’t lose.

    He doesn’t compromise.

And most importantly, he doesn’t distract himself with mortal weakness.

    Not until me.

Kill one to save a million.

That’s what he told me when he took me as his prisoner.

Kill one to save a million.

That’s what he’s been trying to tell himself ever since he took me into his arms.

    REVIEW

    Jill’s Review

I was so curious when I saw the blurb for Born Sinner by SL jennings. I love me some PNR and this looked delicious and dark. And OMG was it ever!

I don’t even know what to tell you about this book because it is something that really needs to be read with as few spoilers as possible. And by that I really mean that you go in essentially blind and let SL Jennings do the world building and learn it all as she discloses it.

This is a story of light and dark. Angels and demons. Heaven and Hell. Learning about oneself. Finding your true motivations. Listening to your conscience. This is not your ordinary angels and demons books. Nothing is as simple as it seems. I was glued to those pages, trying to figure everything out. This story is dark. It isn’t always pretty. But it will grip you, captivate you, hold you fast until you realize you can’t turn anymore pages. Then you just say AHHHHHHHH GIVE ME MORE!

Yes. This is Book 1 in the Se7en Sinners Series. And it sets the groundwork beautifully. I wouldn’t have wanted any more in this story (don’t get me wrong.. I want more! I can’t WAIT to get my hands on the next book) but Born Sinners was perfectly paced and ended at a spot, though it left me hanging, panting for more… made so much sense to end there.

My feelings were all over the place as I followed the twists and turns that were laid out in Born Sinner. I was scared one second hopeful the next. But through it all I was rooting for Eden. I want it all to be right for her so badly. She has been through hell in her life.. I don’t want to see her actually ending up in HELL! The danger, the secrets, the mystery… I can’t wait to finish unraveling the story of Eden and the Se7en!

If you are a PNR fan you NEED this book!

I received a complimentary copy of Born Sinner in exchange for my honest review.

    — EXCERPT —

I’m nervous about what I’m going to say. I’m not sure how she’ll react or if she will even believe me. Afraid I’ll chicken out, though, so I start talking.

“I’m sorry.” The words were surprisingly hard to get out. Apologizing is not something I’ve done often, and I’m not even sure I know how to do it properly.

Sidney raises her eyebrows and presses her lips together. I study her face for any indication of what she’s thinking and notice that her eyes are pink and puffy, like she’s been crying.

The guilt I’ve recently begun experiencing returns. I’m sure I’m the reason for her tears, and the thought of her crying because of me kills. I cup her jaw in my hand before lightly rubbing her cheek with my thumb.

Her eyelids flutter shut and she sighs while tilting her face into my palm. Her reaction gives me the fuel I need to keep going. I pull my hand away, but I’m not ready to stop touching her, so I grab her hand.

“I’m an asshole, Sid. I’ve always been a selfish prick. I’ve never had anyone care about me though, so I’ve always had to be the one to care about me the most. I’m used to doing what I want, getting what I want, and taking what I want. I don’t know how to care about others.” I scrub my palm over my thigh.

“That’s not true, Breccan. I’ve seen you—”

I cut her off with a shake of my head. “I’m a virgin, Sidney,” I say solemnly.

A short burst of laughter escapes her mouth, and she shakes her head. “Yeah, right, Breccan. Do I have ‘dumbass’ stamped on my forehead?” She laughs again.

I rush to explain myself. “Well, I mean, not a virgin virgin. I’m a relationship virgin. I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing here. Hell, I had more finesse the first time I had sex than I do with this whole boyfriend thing
    .”

Her eyes widen at the word boyfriend, but she only says, “Oh.” Then she takes her hand from mine and brings her thumb to her mouth to chew on the nail.

Disappointed at the loss of contact with her skin, I pull her hand out of her mouth and lace my fingers through hers once again. “After you left, I went to my favorite club.” I purposely leave the part about destroying my kitchen out. “I couldn’t even get out of the car, Sidney. I sat there staring at the people dying to get inside and all I could think about was that I was dying to get out of that life. I don’t want to go to the clubs anymore. I’m tired of that shit. I just want to be with you. Here. On this couch. Eating fucking sushi if that’s what you want.”

    I grimace, and she giggles.

It’s the fucking truth. Sitting in my car outside of Raw, all I could think about was how desperately I wanted to feel Sidney’s lips on mine and have her scent in my nose. I would have gladly choked down a pound of that crap if it meant I could go back and undo our fight and what I’d said.

“I’m sorry I freaked out when you called yourself my girlfriend.”

    Her face falls.

I use my free hand to tip her chin up before I confess, “I don’t know how to do this. I have nothing to compare this to.” I use my hand to gesture between us. “But I can tell you that I want you. I want to hear you laugh. I want to make you smile. I want to hold you when you cry.” I run my thumb across her cheek. “I can tell you that I need you. I need your mouth on mine, your hair in my hands, your skin under my fingertips” Taking a chance, I lean in and place a light kiss on her lips.

She doesn’t pull away, so I continue speaking.

“I can tell you that no one else makes me laugh the way you do. No one else makes me feel stronger than you do. I miss you all the fucking time, Sid. Every minute of the day that I’m not with you, I’m dying to see you. My phone dings and I hope it’s you. When it’s not, I’m always so fucking bummed.” Lifting my shoulders in a shrug, I admit, “I’ve never felt this way about another person before, and I’m fumbling around like a kid trying to cop his first feel in the dark. I didn’t realize until tonight that I want you to be my girlfriend. I want to do all the cheesy couple things that people do—with you. And, Sidney, I’m really sorry I didn’t remember you from the club. I don’t know how I could have possibly forgotten you. But it’s not because you are forgettable. Because, ever since you fell down your fucking stairs, I haven’t been able to get you out of my head. And I don’t want to.” I blow out a breath when I finish and glance away from her penetrating gaze.

    undisputed teaser 2
    — REVIEW —
I went not AS Teague’s debut novel sort of blind. I knew that Undisputed was a fighter knowledge, but that was basically all that I knew. What found was a sweet, sexy, beautiful story that will break your heart all while reminding you what is most important in life – to love, be loved and LIVE your life!

We have the ultimate cocky, playboy Breccan. He is the light heavyweight champion in the MMA. On the surface he has it all. But he is self destructing. His friends, trainer they are at their wits end! He is lost and floundering along – nobody & nothing is challenging him anymore. That is until is trainer presents hm with a letter. A letter to visit a child.. a sick child. That scares the SHIT out of him as it does for many people who are confronted with the chronically or terminally ill. That is until he goes and meets Connor and of course Connor’s sexy Aunt Sidney.

Connor really resonated with me. I think he hit me on so many different levels. He is struggling with kidney disease, which I have watched my nephew struggle with since he was born. But I also saw myself in him. A spunky child who isn’t letting himself be defined by his disease. Who just wants to get the most out f every day he is here. That is how I live my life – and whenever I see that attitude depicted in a bak it hits me deep and hard. Plus that kid is HILARIOUS! You can not help but read the scenes he is in with a HUGE smile on your face.

I loved how devoted Sidney was to her nephew. It was so easy to see how she could lose herself in his day to day care, until she came face to face with the pompous Brec. But as Brec showed his true nature and formed a deep bond with Connor you could see the walls crumbling around Sidney. The banter between Brec and Sidney was so welcome. They were funny and cute and it just made me root for them that much harder!

AS Teague did a fantastic job on her debut novel. She grabbed my interest from the prologue and never let it go. Even when my heart was in my throat and tears were on my face, I didn’t want to stop flipping the pages. For me LOVE & LIVING was the ultimate themes in this book. Don’t hold yourself back… live your life and open yourself to love.

    I definitely recommend this book!

    Excerpt

A quiet knock at my door startles me. I turn and crack it open. On the other side stands the most attractive guy I’ve ever seen. He has short dark brown hair, pale skin, and from what I can see, a very well developed body. His eyes, wow they are the brightest shade of blue I’ve ever seen. The thoughts make my heart race and not in a good way. Breathe.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.” He appears genuine and gives me a small smile. God, he has dimples. No man should be as handsome as this and he definitely shouldn’t be grinning at me the way he is. I squirm under his gaze, and for a moment, I forget I’m in my pajamas. When I gather my wits and remember, I quickly bring my arms across my chest. Real smooth. He tries to hide it, but he chuckles softly. I slink away from him, pulling myself farther into my room using the door to cover me a little.

“It’s okay,” I say quietly, trying not to stare at him. He puts a set of earplugs on the shelf right next to my door. I give him an odd look, asking him to elaborate. Talking to men is not something I do. When he doesn’t, I have no choice but to talk.

“She’s a snorer?” I ask, hoping he’s just giving them to me so that his girlfriend or sister and I don’t run into any roommate issues.

Again, he chuckles. “Maybe…” he says, and I glare at him in confusion. “Well, you must be Fate,” he says, sticking out his hand for me to shake. I look to him and hesitate. Time to be normal, Fate. Taking a deep breath, I place my hand in his and shake it firmly.

“Yes, I am,” I say with a shy smile.

“Great, that’d be weird if someone else was in your room, right?” he says with a chuckle. “I’m Cameron.” My breath catches and I pull my hand away.

    What…the…hell…

    About NOWHERE BUT HERE:

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she’s curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn’t mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They’re the good guys. They protect people. They’re…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club’s most respected member—is in town, he’s gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it’s his shot at his dream. What he doesn’t count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

    NOWHERE BUT HERE Excerpt:

From Oz’s Point of View. Set up: Emily has been separated from her parents and after a long night of worrying, her emotions and exhaustion catch up to her and it causes Oz to have his first fluttering of emotion for Emily.

WIND BLOWS IN FROM THE NORTH AND A FEW pieces of Emily’s dark hair sweep across her face. One minute Emily’s a bright flame, then a gust snuffs out her light. Her body sways like a top at the tail end of a spin and I lunge forward.

Emily’s knees give out and her eyes roll back into her head. I catch her inches before she crashes onto the porch. She’s light as I swing her into my arms and her head circles onto my shoulder, reminding me of one of those rag dolls Violet used to play with when we were kids.

“Emily!” Eli’s on top of me, attempting to yank her out of my arms. “Open your eyes.”

Her eyelids flutter, but remain closed as her hand limply clutches my shirt. Eli rams his arms underneath mine and he makes Emily a rope in a tug-of-war. I should let her go. I should want to let her go, but then Emily goes and screws it up for me. “Oz.”

It was a damn whisper, but I heard my name on her lips and so did Eli. His eyes flash to mine and Cyrus’s words repeat in my mind. That girl trusts you. And screw us both for that.

“She’s exhausted,” I say. “Hasn’t slept at all tonight.”

Eli’s expression hardens as he glares at me. I’ve seen Eli throw a coma-inducing punch for less defiance and I readjust the sleeping girl in my arms. A reminder if he decks me now, he’ll be putting his daughter at risk.

Temporarily surrendering, Eli cups Emily’s face in his hands and angles her toward him. “Emily, please open your eyes.”

She does. It’s barely a crack and they’re completely glazed.

“Everything’s going to be okay,” Eli affirms.

“I want my mom and dad,” she mumbles.

“You’ll see them tomorrow.” Eli pushes a strand of hair from her cheek. “You’re safe here. I promise.”

She rejects Eli by curling into me. Her head fits perfectly in the crook of my neck and I loathe the wave of protectiveness that rumbles through my body. Emily’s fingers tighten their grip near my shoulders and the impulse is to shield her from the guys gawking at this intimate scene. Yeah, this is club business, but Emily never asked for any of this.

New York Times bestselling author Joanna Wylde returns to the “wild and raw”* world of the Reapers MC with the story of Gage and Tinker…

    The club comes first.

I’ve lived by those words my whole life—assumed I’d die by them, too, and I never had a problem with that. My Reaper brothers took my back and I took theirs and it was enough. Then I met her. Tinker Garrett. She’s beautiful, she’s loyal, and she works so damned hard it scares me sometimes . . . She deserves a good man—one better than me. I can’t take her yet because the club still needs me. There’s another woman, another job, another fight just ahead.

Now she’ll learn I’ve been lying to her all along. None of it’s real. Not my name, not my job, not even the clothes I wear. She thinks I’m nice. She pretends we’re just friends, that I’ve still got a soul . . . Mine’s been dead for years. Now I’m on fire for this woman, and a man can only burn for so long before he destroys everything around him.

    I’m coming for you, Tinker.

    Soon.

    “Why did you do that?”

It was the first time she’d spoken without being prompted. “Do what?”

Her face flushed the sweetest pink. The color went all the way down that sexy V-neck. Her breasts flushed as well as her face, and it made his damn dick tighten. “Kiss me. Why did you kiss me like that?”

Oh, so many reasons, but he gave her the most compelling one. “I wanted to.”

The minute she’d opened the door and he’d seen her standing there looking anxious, he’d known how to calm her down. All he’d had to do was put his hands on her and some odd connection flared between the two of them. She hadn’t fought him. He could have gone on kissing her. He’d been the one to pull away.

It was like the minute he walked in, he was the only thing that existed for her. It made him feel ten feet tall, but it also made him want to please her.

    It was an unsettling sensation.

Her hands came up, fingers on the sides of the table. “You know what I’m asking. You knew I wasn’t alone. Why did you pretend to be my boyfriend?”

It was easy to see she’d wanted him to wait for her at the restaurant so as to avoid him meeting her sister and ex. When she’d opened the door, he’d immediately known something was wrong. He’d gotten a glimpse of her sister and known Ellie had likely needed a hand. It had to be tough on a woman’s ego to lose even a pathetic excuse of a husband to a younger sister.

“You were alone with your sister who slept with your husband. Excuse me. Ex-husband.”

She shook her head. “At the time, we were definitely married. How did you know he was my ex-husband?”

“He took half your net wealth. I’m your lawyer. At this level, a good lawyer is less legal counsel and more war consultant. I can’t properly perform my duties if I don’t know everything about you, including the fact that you tend to have terrible taste in men.”

She frowned. “I haven’t had a ton of boyfriends. I’m not sure what my taste is.”

He really wanted to understand why she’d married that obvious prick. “What attracted you to him? Because from where I was standing, he looked like a dickwad desperate to be twenty-one again.”

She bit into her bottom lip, her eyes glancing away from him. “He wasn’t always like that. I actually met him when he was twenty-one. He was far more mature then.”

He liked her candor. “You were in college?”

“Last year of undergrad. We dated for two years and then it seemed like it was time to get married. We’d moved back here to Manhattan so I could take my place at StratCast. I thought he was going to go to grad school, but he decided on a different path.”

    “What path was that?”

A single brow rose over her right eye. “You don’t know?”

Of course he knew. He knew everything. “Are you referring to your ex-husband’s penchant for swinging for the fences? When it comes to investments, that is.”

It was what he liked to call “idiots who funded ridiculous ideas.” They never wanted a simple profit out of their money. They wanted millions and really fucking fast. They swung for the grand slam when all they needed to do was get on base.

It took a true genius to take a single idea and make millions off it. Drew had.

Her shoulders straightened. “He wanted the easy solution. A get-rich-quick scheme. He wasn’t that way at first. At one point he was very intellectual. It’s what attracted me to him. He was curious about the world and liked to discuss everything from politics to social jus- tice to movies we saw. He changed. I didn’t. In some ways, I blame getting involved with me for what happened to him. He got around my father and real wealth and wanted some of his own. When I met him, he wanted to be a professor. He wanted to teach.”

At least he’d gotten her this far. She was talking. Now he needed to get those shoulders down from around her earlobes. For one moment, for that moment when he’d drawn her into his arms and pressed his mouth to hers, she’d relaxed against him, given over to him. Her body had softened and she’d leaned into him, and if he’d pressed her, he didn’t know what would have happened. She might have continued kissing him, forgetting all about the other people in the room. He could have cupped her breast, her ass. Put his hands anywhere he liked.

She hadn’t given a damn that they hadn’t been alone. All she’d cared about was him.

    Excerpt:

I’m not usually a sleepover kind of guy, but I was so comfortable and tired last night that I must have dozed off with Nat. And then round two happened and we must have both passed out again. Usually I feel awkward and cagey if I happen to make the mistake of falling asleep in a chick’s bed. But right now, I don’t feel anything but Nat’s skin on mine and a warm feeling of content in my chest. I push away analyzing that. I don’t analyze. And I don’t want to start now.

“No, stay. You actually make for a nice pillow. But don’t talk, you’ll ruin it.” She stirs and her body slithers on mine as she backs herself against my front, creating the best kind of friction.

“A pillow? That’s all I’m good for. Not what you were saying last night. And this morning.” I grin and wrap my arm around her tiny torso.

Nat sighs. “You may have just ruined it.”

I nibble at the porcelain slice of exposed skin on her neck. “Does this make up for it?”

    “Mmmm.”

I’ll take that as a yes.

A few minutes of snuggling more, and then Nat begins to get restless. I can tell from the twitching of her fingers, the way she jiggles her legs. And I realize this woman and I have more in common than I could ever possibly imagine.

“You can never sit still, can you?”

I feel the tiny smile that stretches her lips. “Never. It’s like once my body is up for the day, I can’t go back to bed. It has to move.”

“It’s like we’re related or something.” I laugh, and then my face goes stone cold sober as I feel Nat start to quake with laughter. “That’s not what I meant! No! Um … I meant on a spiritual level. We’re cut from the same cloth or something. Not like brother and sister kind of shit, but … you know what I’m saying!”

Her howls of laughter echo off the cement dorm walls. “No keep going, I’m really enjoying this hole you’re digging yourself.”

My heart rate has picked up as I tickle and pinch her sides, distracting her from my stupid use of words. “You know what I meant!”

She gulps in a lungful of air. “I sure hope so. I’d hope you don’t fuck your sister like that.”

Cackles of laughter peel from her mouth.

“It’s only because I have no sister that this isn’t totally, horribly gross.” I grumble.

My little sister is such a drama queen. Literally. Jade is an actress on Broadway.

She clapped her hands together, applauding the students who’d just bravely put themselves out there to try out for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. “You all did such a great job today! Tomorrow we cast the roles and start our first rehearsal. This is gonna be epic!”

Jade had come out to the Bay Area to visit our family for the week and offered to volunteer at the youth center where I worked. Since there wasn’t enough time to produce an entire play, Jade decided to direct the kids in one key scene from the musical that would be performed later in the week.

I loved my job as director of the arts at the Mission Youth Center. It was just about the only thing going right in my life. The only downside was the fact that these walls were haunted by memories of my ex, Elec, who used to be a youth counselor here. That was how we met. He’d loved his job, too, until he quit so that he could move to New York after we broke up. He moved to be with her. I shook my head to shoo away thoughts of him and Greta.

Jade grabbed her purse. “I need to go back to your place to use the bathroom and have a quick bite.”

I’d just moved into a new apartment that was only a few blocks away from my job. The lease had finally run out on the place I’d been renting with Elec across town. Even though my ex sent me his half of the rent for the remainder of our lease after he’d moved out, I couldn’t wait to vacate that place; every corner of it reminded me of him and of the miserable months that followed our break up.

My place was right in the south central section of the Mission District. I loved the culture in my new neighborhood. Produce bins and a variety of cafes lined the streets. It was also a mecca for Latin culture, which was great, except for the fact that it reminded me of Elec, who was half Ecuadorian. Little reminders of the guy who broke my heart were everywhere.

Jade and I strolled down the sidewalk, stopping at a fruit stand so that she could buy some papayas for an afternoon smoothie she planned to make back at my apartment. We also ended up getting two coffees to go.

I bent back the opening on my coffee lid as we walked. “So, little sis, I never thought we would be in the same predicament at the same time.”

Jade had recently been dumped by her musician boyfriend.

“Yes. But the difference is, I feel like I have way more distractions in my life than you do. It’s not that I don’t think about Justin. It’s not that I don’t get sad, but my performances keep me so busy that it’s almost like I don’t have time to wallow in it, you know?”

“I told you I’ve been doing these phone therapy sessions, right?”

Jade took a sip then shook her head. “No.”

“Yeah. I found this psychologist who specializes in trauma from failed relationships, but she’s in Canada. Anyway, we do phone sessions one night a week.”

    “Is it helping?”

“It always helps to talk things out.”

“Yeah. But no offense, you don’t seem any better for it. Anyway, you can talk things out with Claire or me. You don’t need to pay big bucks to talk to a stranger.”

“Nighttime is really my only time to talk to anyone. You’re performing at night, and Claire is too wrapped up in being a blissful newlywed. Besides, she’s never had her heart broken. She listens, but she doesn’t get it.”

Our older sister, Claire, married her high school sweetheart. Even though the three of us were close growing up in nearby Sausalito, I’d always felt more comfortable opening up to Jade.

When we arrived at my building, my sister stopped to sit on one of the benches in the corner of the fenced-in courtyard. “Let’s sit for a bit, finish our coffees.” Her gaze wandered across the grass to my shirtless neighbor. “Okay…who’s the hottie in the beanie defacing the property?”

“What is it with you and beanies?”

“Justin used to wear one. That’s why I love them. Isn’t that sad?”

    “That is sad.”

“This from the girl who still sleeps in her ex’s shirt.”

“It’s comfortable. It has nothing to do with Elec,” I lied. It was the one thing I allowed myself from him. It made me sad, but I wore it anyway.

    “So…who is that guy?”

I didn’t know my neighbor’s name, but I’d see him once in a while doing spray paint art along the wrap-around concrete wall that surrounded the property. It served as a vast canvas. His spray painting was true art, definitely not what would be considered simple graffiti. It was an elaborate mix of celestial and geographical images. This guy just kept adding different artwork to the wall gradually. It was a work in progress. I could only assume he planned to paint the entire circumference of the property, as much as the wall space would allow.

“He lives in the building, next door to me, actually.”

“What is he doing? They allow him to do that here?”

“I don’t know. The first time I saw him out here, I thought he was vandalizing the property. But no one seems to care or stop him. Every day, he adds to the mural. It’s actually quite beautiful. But it doesn’t match his personality.”

Jade blew on her coffee. “What do you mean?”

    “He’s not very nice.”

    “You’ve talked to him?”

“No. He’s just not friendly. I’ve tried to make eye contact, but he walks right by me. He has these two big dogs, and they’re pretty mean. They bark all of the time. He walks them every morning.”

“Maybe he’s like a savant. You know, really good with art. Or maybe he’s a genius but with limited social skills. What do they call that…Asperger’s?”

“No. He communicates just fine. I’ve seen him yelling at a few people. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have that. This guy is just not friendly. He doesn’t have Asperger’s. He’s just an ass.

Jade chuckled. “I think you should totally stop by his place with some warm muffins wrapped up in a basket. It’s the neighborly thing to do. Maybe he’ll loosen up…or loosen you up.”

“Muffins, huh? What’s that code for?”

“Muff…muffins. Same thing. If I lived here, I’d be all over that. But I don’t live here. You do. And you totally need a distraction. I say…he’s it.”

I admired the guy’s broad shoulders and tanned muscular back as his arm moved the spray can up and down. “God, doesn’t he remind you of Elec, though? Arm tattoo…dark hair. Artistic. Basically, that’s the last type of guy I’m going for at this point.”

“So, if someone looks like or seems similar to Elec, then they’re automatically disqualified? They’re destined to do the same thing Elec did? Is that how you think? That’s just stupid rationale.”

“Maybe that’s fucked-up. But the last thing I want is to be with someone who reminds me of him in the least.”

“Well, that’s a shame, because Elec was freaking hot, and this guy…is even hotter.”

“Can you remind me why we’re discussing this? The dude doesn’t even say hello to me. He’s not signing up to be on this delusional version of The Bachelorette. He’s not interested.”

Neighbor Dearest suddenly wiped the sweat from his forehead, took off the mask covering his nose and mouth, and dumped the spray cans into a black drawstring sack. He slung it over his shoulder and just when I thought he was going to walk away and out of the courtyard, he began to walk in our direction. Jade straightened in her seat, and I hated that my pulse raced a bit.

His eyes were focused on me. I wouldn’t call it an angry stare, but he wasn’t smiling. The sunlight beamed directly into his blue eyes, which glowed and really stood out against his tan skin. Jade was right; this guy was truly gorgeous.

“Blueberry are my favorite,” he said.

    “What?”

    “Muffins.”

    “Oh.”

Jade snorted but stayed silent, letting me take the brunt of this humiliation.

    “And I’m not anti-social or a savant. I’m just a good old-fashioned prick…with supersonic hearing.”

He smirked and walked away before I could say anything.

When he was safely out of earshot—for real this time—Jade sighed. “Angry guys are the best in bed.”

“You just can’t stop yourself, can you? Haven’t you done enough damage? I’ve always told you that you’re loud when you think you’re whispering. Now there’s proof…at my expense.”

“You’ll be thanking me later when you’re screaming out in orgasm as the angry artist is Van Goh-ing down on you.”

    “You’re crazy.”

    “That’s why you love me.”

    “It is.”

Damien was a hotter version of my ex.

The neighbor I’d dubbed “Angry Artist” also had two massive dogs that kept me up with their barking.

He wanted nothing to do with me. Or so I thought until one night I heard laughter coming through an apparent hole in my bedroom wall.

Damien had been listening to all of my phone sessions with my therapist.

The sexy artist next door now knew all of my deepest secrets and insecurities.

    We got to talking.

He set me straight with tips to get over my breakup.

He became a good friend, but Damien made it clear that he couldn’t be anything more.

Problem was, I was falling hard for him anyway. And as much as he pushed me away, I knew he felt the same…because his heartbeat didn’t lie.

I thought my heart had been broken by Elec, but it was alive and beating harder than ever for Damien.

I just hoped he wouldn’t shatter it for good.

Author’s note – Neighbor Dearest is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

    Title: Opposites Attract
Series: The Locklaine Boys (Book 2)
    Author: Jessica Prince
    Genre: Contemporary Romantic Comedy

    Opposites Attract High Res

    OA Synopsis

Delilah Northcutt has been described as weird, nerdy. But her favorite term is quirky. The eccentric flower shop owner definitely marches to the beat of her own drum. On the rebound from a cheating ex, she’s not looking to open her heart to someone else any time soon. On a whim, her best friend convinces her that one night with a stranger she’ll never see again is just what she needs to pull herself out of the funk she’s been living in.

Overly serious, workaholic Richard Locklaine was always described as the twin determined to do the right thing. Even if it was at the cost of his own well-being. But after years in a loveless, manipulative marriage, he’s finally free and ready to build a life of his choosing. And nowhere in that life is there room for another woman—unless it’s for just one night, of course.

They are complete opposites in every single way. But for some reason, fate has decided to force the two of them together. Despite the chemistry, they’re determined to fight the attraction growing between them. Besides, what could a florist with horrible taste in music and an attorney from Connecticut ever really have in common? Only one thing is certain. When they finally come together, it’s going to be epic.

***This is Book 2 in the Locklaine Boys series, a spin-off of Love Hate Relationship. They are interconnected standalones.***

    OA Excerpt

I pulled my door closed behind me and looked back at the woman, giving her words I, in no way, shape, or form, meant. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”

She fluttered her eyelashes at me. “Promise.”

Nope. “Yep.” I jabbed the down button over and over until I heard a ding and one set of doors opened. Pushing her in, I gave a little wave and a quick, “Have a good night,” before turning on my bare feet and stomping past my apartment, straight to the door of the woman who’d been a pain in my ass for the past week.

I beat on her front door with my fists hard enough to know she’d hear me over the music.

After a few seconds the door flew open with the sound of angry words flying at me. “You’ve got some nerve, you son of a—”

My jaw dropped as I stared at the woman standing before me, all my rage completely forgotten as I stared into those familiar eyes covered by black-framed glasses. “Delilah?”

“Holy balls!” she shouted as another woman came sliding to a halt directly behind her.

“No fucking way!” the brunette shouts. “You’re our douchebag neighbor?”

You’re the women with shit-taste in music and no respect for the people that live around them?” I fired back, suddenly remembering what I was doing on their doorstep in the first place.

“Hey asshole—” the brunette started, but she was interrupted by her tiny roommate who’d just sent her fist flying through the air and directly into my nose.

“YOU CHEATING SON OF A BITCH!” she screeched as I hunched over, cupping my bleeding nose.

“What the hell is your problem, crazy?!” I managed to get out. When I was finally able to stand up, my vision was distorted from the tears forming in my eyes. “Jesus Christ! I think you broke my nose!”

“You deserve worse!” she shouted. “I can’t believe you! You have a beautiful fiancée that you’re marrying in a month, and you’re screwing sluts in your bachelor pad! You’re disgusting!”

Blinking rapidly to clear the spots from my vision, I looked at Delilah, thinking what a shame it was that someone as adorable as her turned out to be bat-shit crazy. “What the fuck are you talking about? I’m not engaged!” I pulled my hands away from my nose and looked for blood. “Christ, that hurt. Am I bleeding?” I tipped my head up, trying to stop any potential blood from pouring out.

Her words were clipped, her voice menacing. “You’re not bleeding, you big baby. And I know you’re engaged. I’ve met your fiancée. And I met you when you came to get her bouquet! Jeez, your memory must be really shitty, huh?” she finished sarcastically.

I lowered my head and glared at the tiny woman in front of me. “Oh, I remember all right. You were a fucking nut job then, too!”

She had the audacity to suck in an affronted gasp. “I am not a nut job!”

Choosing to ignore her objection — seeing as a crazy person never admits they’re crazy, I continued on. “I was doing a favor for my brother’s fiancée, not mine. And I’ll have you know my memory is just fine.”

The brunette still standing in the doorway let out a little snort and muttered what sounded like, “Wouldn’t put money on that, hotshot.”

I turned my glare to her. “What the hell’s that supposed to mean?” She shrugged and gave me a knowing smile, but before I could press further Delilah spoke up.

“Wait… what do you mean your brother’s fiancée? You’re not engaged to Navie?”

I scowled the best I could, considering I could feel my pulse in my face. “No, psycho. I’m not engaged to Navie. I’m not engaged to anyone.”

Delilah shot her friend a look and the brunette bugged her eyes out and tipped her head to the side in return. It was like they were having a complete conversation with nothing but strange, exaggerated faces before finally remembering that the man one of them had maimed was still standing there.

“Uh…” Delilah wrung her hands in front of her and let out an awkward laugh. “So this is a little embarrassing.”

“You don’t say?” I deadpanned, still pinching the bridge of my nose.

She held her hands out in surrender and had the good grace to look ashamed. “Look, it was all a huge misunderstanding.” Reaching out, she wrapped her fingers around my forearm and, even in my angry state, I couldn’t help but be aware of just how soft her hands were. “If you’ll come in, I’ll get you some ice for your…” she twirled her finger in the general direction on my face and cringed, “…nose.”

Someone has to die. It will be one of the four.

    Synpsis

Amity David is not human, as the seventeen-year-old pastor’s daughter had thought she was. Her life has now been upturned and possibly set aright with the help of Mackenzie Abel, a young priest as conflicted about his calling as Amity is about hers. Blindly searching for answers together that will serve God’s intent, the two also struggle against feelings they have developed for one another. Can Amity trust the alleged angel who told her she is descended from a demon? Part of her hopes not because, if true, it means she is being called to help free others like her from the ties of her evil heritage through war. What happens when a being created out of evil, is called to fight on the side of good? And what if this evil being thinks she is a good per-son, only to find she is not even a person at all?

    Amity of the Angelmen 3

    Excerpt

Mallory and Amity giggled at their tall friend being called little by her mother, who was clearly not even five feet tall.

Her mother seemed not to hear her and kept talking to Mallory. “Maybe I should not have saved up my money to help her pay for that car of hers. Hmm?”

She chuckled and patted Mallory’s hand. “Oh well, no matter. I’m glad to have you girls here today. Hey, I know what. Do you want to have some fun?”

Allison and Mallory smiled big and leaned in close. They seemed to know what was coming. Amity felt worse and worse, until she was dizzy and almost lost her balance. The others were so focused on their new activity they didn’t notice all the blood had drained from Amity’s face. She just wanted to get to the door and run.

“Let’s start with you,” Allison’s mother said to Mallory. “Did Allison tell you what I do?”

“Yes,” Mallory said, glancing quickly over at Amity to let her know they were getting to the good stuff. She played along with Allison’s mother, giddy like a child on her first day of school.

Amity leaned against the wall so she wouldn’t fall over. She felt like she wasn’t exactly present, like she was watching a movie and wasn’t there in her own body. It was a strange feeling, and one she hoped would soon pass.

    Allison’s mother’s face dropped, deadpan.

“Give me your hand, darling. I will tell you things you may or may not know. I have a gift, and some call me the Reader because I can read… their souls.” She paused slightly before saying the last two words.

It was clear where Allison’s flair for the dramatic originated, though that thought was lost on Amity at the moment.

Amity didn’t know if she was imagining it, but the kitchen grew slightly darker. She thought the shadows above them looked like they were swirling. Was it from the headlights on cars turning at the corner or something? Amity was next to a window and turned to look for cars, but saw none. Her head whipped back around the exact second the Reader touched Mallory’s hand. Amity lost all control of her muscles.

Eeeeee,” the eerie shriek pierced the rushing wind that had entered the room. The room went completely dark as shadows covered the windows. Two shadows that had been swirling above the kitchen table dropped like a weight and settled into vague forms on either side of Mallory. The forms leaned in Amity’s direction. The Reader didn’t release Mallory’s hand. The three seated humans didn’t notice the loud sound of rushing wind but they certainly heard the ear shattering screeches and covered their ears. They stared at Amity.

The wind, the shrieks — it was all coming from Amity.

    Guest Post

    The Angelmen’s Race to Battle

Do you remember being seventeen? Junior year in high school. Possibly the biggest problems you had were your chemistry grade and who you’d be going with to the prom.

Amity David worried mostly about her grades and pleasing her father, pastor of Dewdrop Fellowship Church. The youngest of six kids, though, she was happiest to sit by quietly as others did the talking and all the important work.

But that wasn’t what God had planned for her. As a matter of fact, what God had in store for Amity, He had planned thousands of years prior, before Noah’s flood.

That was when Satan changed the game. Knowing that God’s plan to save mankind would come from the seed of a woman, he corrupted that seed by sending his demon followers to  procreate with human women. The resulting race of half-human/half demons were described in Genesis 6 as the Nephilim. His plan backfired when Jesus Christ was born in spite of his efforts.

Now, in the 21st century, few people had ever even heard of the Nephilim. The attitudes of man have seldom altered the will of God, however, God gave the Nephilim a second look. He chose to bring awake this special race and bring them into His fold. Nephilim, now called Angelmen, were called out one by one by their guiding angels and prepared for battle.

The devil reworked his plan. Demon blood put the angelmen under Satan’s command. They could be used by him in the final battle between Jesus and his saints and Satan and his followers.

But after years and years of nothing but human parents, the angelmen began to tug on the heart of God. He determined to bring them out of Satan’s bondage through a battle of their own. He chose four very special angelmen, who would work in perfect harmony without even realizing it, to lead the battle against Satan.

Working with human-like beings, whether favored by God or not, had its downfalls, not the least of which would be fallibility. The four leaders – Amity, Asher, Caedmon, and Malachi – each had their own flaws. Getting them to all work together, looking past their own needs, to achieve a goal they could barely understand – saving a race of thousands they had never even know about before – wouldn’t be easy.

Amity was called to be the Messenger. She was tasked with delivering a very important message to get the ball rolling. However, confrontation was not her strong point. Although a strong Christian who would love to please her God, she wasn’t sure just how far she was willing to go to do that.

Asher, on the other hand, loved the limelight. His athletic success as a track and football star made him feel unstoppable. Professional football, any girl he wanted, and love from the public with his winning smile were on his near horizon. His human life was way too comfortable to leave, starting over in a field where he wasn’t the top dog.

Malachi had already made way too many mistakes in his life of twenty-one years. So many, he had been trying to escape his life for years. Starting a new one was not what he had in mind. Being called as the commander of an inexperienced army would never be something in his future … unless he was bribed with just the right hope.

Then there was 10-year-old Caedmon. (pronounced “KADE man”) Still mourning the loss of his parents in an accident that should have also claimed his life, all the boy could do was try to pick up the pieces and avoid his nasty guardians. Given exciting new powers was exciting… when he could control them. But who was going to trust a kid as a leader in battle?

The four were called at the same time, because getting them to a very specific destination at the same time would be essential. Getting them to work together beyond that meant saving the race of the angelmen from Satan’s control.

Will they be able to get beyond their own problems to bring their kin into God’s favor? Thousands of others are counting on it.

    About the Author

A former elementary school teacher and subsequent lover of the English language in the written word, Tracy Slonaker found several new hobbies after embarking on the new career of motherhood. One hobby was running distances, which gave her plenty of time to create characters, build plots, and listen for God’s input. The result of all this thinking was the birth of a new hobby: writing the Angelmen Series, an analogy of God’s love for His people. Amity of the Angelmen is the first installment of this series.

Tracy enjoys her life as a wife and mother of three in central Pennsylvania. She has learned to love running and cycling, and has not given up her childhood fondness of sports. She gives thanks to the Lord for all His good gifts.
