Have you ever wondered if regret will imprison you, or does it set us free as the truth does?

Regret was the one thing I had. It owned my charred black soul. That emotion was digging so deep into my bones like a deadly disease.

I hid it well. Let people believe I was a kind man.

I’m far from one. I’m brash, bold, and angry at the curveball life has thrown at me.

My saving grace came in the form of a tiny bundle wrapped in pink.
    My daughter.

The day I learned I’d raise her on my own, was the day I kept the only vow I didn’t intend to break. I wasn’t letting a woman in my bed or my heart. There wasn’t room for one with my daughter owning one half and a woman I let slip through my fingers holding onto the other without her knowing it.

I kept that vow until now.

    She’s back.

The one that owns the other half of my heart.

She’s carrying more pain than she left with, I can see it in her eyes. I should never have let her go, and now my regret is here, facing me head-on. I made a mistake, one I plan to rectify.

I am a Mitchell, after all. I’ll stop at nothing to get what I want.

    Her.

I have to prove to her that there will be no more broken promises, show her that my heart, the half I gave to her so long ago, is still hers.

Unforgiven picks up just where we left off in Justified. This book centers on the Lawton’s sister, Kody, and Texas Ranger Hill Gamble. Talk about a couple that just doesn’t seem like a match on paper!

Hill is back in Loveless to investigate the death of Kody’s father. Hill is best friend’s with Kody’s older brother, and the brother of Kody’s deceased first love (that’s a tough hurdle to get over!) Kody doesn’t exactly walk the straight and narrow. She is wild and colorful, a bar owner, and she has questionable ties to the local biker club. How on earth will these two come together?

I enjoyed the almost forbidden aspect of their relationship. They both had spent years pining for the other and feeling guilty for their feelings. So when they came together, it was electric. I liked how genuine their feelings for each other were. How deeply they truly cared about each other. And how well they really fit together. I do wish that we got a little bit more of their relationship. That we could have seen them develop a bit more. I feel like the action and suspense in the book took a little bit away from their relationship. Now don’t get me wrong… I still thoroughly enjoyed Hill and Kody. And the suspense in the book held me utterly captivated!

I definitely enjoyed this installment in the Loveless Texas world and can’t wait to travel back there to see what happens next!

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

They say if you set something free and it comes back to you, it was meant to be. For Mitch and Jayna, what happens when the one you have never been able to forget is suddenly right back in the middle of your world?

    Mitch
I believed in love once…until I saw how it only caused heartache and pain. Watching my dad break after losing my mom was more than I could process. Then feeling forgotten by the girl I thought would always be there for me was too much. I let her go, erecting a wall around my heart. Being a divorce lawyer is a daily reminder that I did the right thing. Have fun, but don’t allow anyone to get too close. It was working out just fine. At least until my past found its way back to me.

    Jayna
He was the love of my life, my forever. When we attended different colleges, I thought our devotion was strong enough to handle the distance, but he said we should take a break, telling me it was for my own good. It was so hard to forget him, but I finally did, and even thought I had moved on. Now, years later, I again see the man I’ve never once stopped loving, only he’s not the same. Those old feelings have come crashing back in, now all I can do is hope that I’ll one day find my Mitch.

Will the promise they once made remain true? Can Mitch and Jayna find their way back to each other and rekindle the flame they thought would never extinguish? Or has time and distance changed them both?

    Chapter 3
    MADDALENA

Not much changed for those of us in service at the Vatican Palace when the new pope took over. There were still the same tasks to see to, the same rooms to be cleaned, the same floors to be scrubbed, and the same laundry to be washed. The Holy Father was to be obeyed whoever he was, and his earthly house was to be kept clean and running smoothly so he could attend to far more lofty matters.

One morning I was returning to the kitchens with an empty tray from one of the cardinals’ rooms—the new Vice-Chancellor, Ascanio Sforza by name—when I passed a man heading for the Holy Father’s audience chamber. He was rather garishly dressed, in brightly colored hose and tunic with a huge codpiece, and wear- ing a hat with a large feather in it. He winked and leered at me as I passed, and I cast my eyes down. Surely such a man was not fit for an audience with the Holy Father?

I caught up with one of the other maids, Fabrizia, at the end of the hallway. “Fabrizia,” I murmured, my voice low so my words would not echo off the marble floors and walls, “who is that man?” I jerked my chin toward the man’s retreating back.

She snickered. “That’s Juan Borgia. The pope’s son,” she confided.

I gasped. All of Rome knew of the existence of Cardinal Borgia’s children—Pope Alexander, I corrected myself. It was no secret that many of the other cardinals had mistresses and bastard children as well. But for a pope to acknowledge such children . . . “He brings his children into the Vatican?” I asked, shocked. “He allows them to be known as such, even now that he has been made pope?”

Fabrizia nodded. “It is unusual, indeed. No referring to them as his nephews or nieces, as popes usually do. And you know he keeps a mistress, yes?”

I gasped again. I had heard the whisperings, but I tried my best to close my ears to such things. Gossip—especially gossip about the Holy Father—was a sin.

Yet my curiosity rose, despite my pangs of guilt. I shall confess this sin after Mass on Sunday, I promised myself. “I . . . he does?” I asked.

Fabrizia’s eyes gleamed, and she drew me into a small alcove. She was well and truly settled in to gossip. “Oh, yes. Honestly, Maddalena, even for a country bumpkin you seem altogether too innocent sometimes—and you a widow, no less. Her name is Giulia Farnese and she is the most beautiful woman in Rome. He keeps her with his cousin, Adriana, and his daughter, Lucrezia. Can you imagine? And La Bella Farnese is married to Adriana’s own son! They were just married when Giulia La Bella caught Cardinal Bor- gia’s eye, and so Donna Adriana banished her son to the country estates to get him out of the way—before the cuckold’s horns were even properly affixed to his head, they say.” She snickered. “If the stories are true, Cardinal Borgia—Pope Alexander—has rewarded Adriana and her family richly, including the poor cuckolded son, which is exactly what she was hoping for.” She leaned closer and lowered her voice further. “He is said to be moving them to the pal- ace of Santa Maria in Portico. He wants La Bella Farnese nearer to him—they say there is a secret passage that connects the Vatican Palace to that one, so he can visit her in secret.”

I crossed myself automatically. “God forgive him,” I said. “He has been led astray by a harlot.” Immediately I regretted my words—he was the Holy Father; he could do no wrong. Who was I to criticize, when I could not understand the ways in which God spoke to His representative on earth? “But that is not for us to say,” I added hastily.

Fabrizia rolled her eyes. “Indeed,” she said. “All I know is men do what they want, whether they wear hose or a cardinal’s robes. Or a pope’s, even. I don’t know that God has much to say about it. But his son, that Juan . . .” She nodded in the direction from which we’d come. “They say Pope Alexander has big plans for him, and for his other son, Cesare. He’ll not let his children fade into the background, not the Borgia pope.”

    ****

It was some weeks before I saw the other son, Cesare. It was late evening, and he looked to be heading in the direction of the pope’s private rooms. I curtsied to him as he passed in the darkened hall- way in his purple archbishop’s robes. I felt his eyes on me as I curt- sied, and when I rose our eyes met briefly. Goodness, but he was handsome, with his head of thick, dark curls under his cap and his dark eyes and the stubble lining his cheeks and chin, which looked like they belonged on a statue in the Vatican gardens. He was much more handsome than his fop of a brother, that was for certain. His eyes turned away, forward once more.

My cheeks burned with shame as I continued on, back to my cot in the bowels of the palace where I shared a room with three other maids. Cesare Borgia was a man of God, an archbishop, no less—it was not meet that I should think him comely or attractive. I crossed myself, whispering a silent prayer of forgiveness. Back in my room, I bent over the handkerchief I was embroidering, squinting at it in the dim light, and recited a prayer with each few stitches to keep my thoughts from wandering where they did not belong.

It has been a long time since I dove into a true historical fiction… you know the ones that take actual events and characters from history and throw in a few fictional one and then take you on a behind the scenes ride through history. AHHHHHH—I forgot how much I loved this genre!!

I really enjoyed Alyssa Palombo’s writing style. The book was easy to read despite the wealth of facts and information that created the backdrop to this family drama. Because when you boil it all down that is what this is. The story behind the Borgia family drama as told by the son Cesare and of course to make the book that much more interesting also from one of the servants in the Borgia household, Maddalena.

These were not glorified perfect people. Oh my, everyone in this book is so far from perfect! These were seriously flawed characters. But for me that is what made the book so captivating. All of these people acting out, manipulating, bending wills to their way… but even though you could see this ugly side of them and their ambitions we also got a peek into their hearts. And though ambition, greed and pride drive so many of their actions, so does love. And seeing that love added beauty to this tale.

The Borgia Confessions was everything that I didn’t realize I was missing. It was chock full of history, drama, scandal, intrigue and passion.

So many will take a day or evening, if you will, to plan a little something for the big day. After they celebrate, those people will help the others. Here’s the icing…” One flashes a grin.

     “Do tell, sir!” Brannon shouts.

“We’re going to recreate where and how we met them. The best part, we’re going to pen a letter so we can surprise them. If you met in another state, think outside the box and go for the how instead of where. The love letter should speak to them, reminding them of why we fell in love and how incredible they all are. Excerpt:

As I stood in the doorway, I took in the bar. It had a decent-size crowd considering it was a Tuesday night. The mix of patrons was as eclectic as the decor. It was all very Kody. The building was an old barn, so the interior had a lot of western elements, including old whiskey barrels for tables. But there were also brightly colored artwork and neon signs brightening up the space. Instead of the big lighting fixture in the middle of the bar being made out of antlers or wrought iron, it was an intricate mix of colorful glass beads. The whole thing was very country and western meets boho chic. The people filling up the seats were mostly Loveless residents. They included the guys gathered near the bar dressed in leather, covered in tattoos, and rocking club colors. The Sons of Sorrow motorcycle club had moved into the hill country on the outskirts of Loveless years after Id left town. Now their flashy bikes and intimidating presence were as commonplace as pickup trucks and horse trailers. It made sense they liked Kodys bar since it was between town and their clubhouse, but I didnt have to like it.

I really didnt like the way the large, dark-haired man leaning across the bar looked at Kody. I knew from Case that Palmer Shot” Caldwell was the current president of the Texas branch of the club. Id taken it upon myself to learn more about the man when he ended up in the middle of the last case that brought me home. Shot was a former marine, a decorated sniper, the son of the founder of the club, and someone Kody was inexplicably close to. Everything about her relationship with the biker set my teeth on edge and had me wanting to make a claim I had no right to stake.

As I stepped forward, the heavy wooden door shut with a bang behind me and drew the eyes of the people sitting closest to me. I saw a couple of looks of recognition, and some people purposely looking away. I nodded and touched the tip of my finger to the brim of my hat in a fairly polite greeting. These people werent my friends. No one in this town had tried to help my brother when he needed it the most, and I would never forget that. Unlike the Lawton kids, Id left Loveless in the rearview mirror and planned on never looking back. All of my worst memories were here. So was the one person I wanted more than anything but knew I could never have.

Under the dim bar lights, I met Kodys gaze across the room. She looked pale. Her wild mane of multicolored blond hair was messier than usual, and she appeared to be swaying slightly every time she let go of her hold on the bar. Her eyes narrowed, and at first, I thought she was giving me a dirty look, but the next instant her entire body lurched and she toppled over, listing to the side and disappearing behind the wide, long bar.

My heart stopped for a split second and I had to bite my tongue to stop from screaming her name. I found myself in dangerous, deadly situations due to my job, but I couldnt recall a single instance when I had been as terrified as I was in that moment Kody went down.

I heard the biker shout her name and was vaguely aware of him kicking back his bar stool as he jumped to his feet. I was moving before I had time to weigh whether it was a good idea. Kody didnt like it when I was in her space. Shed told me she hated me and ordered me to leave her alone on more than one occasion, but none of that stopped me from reaching the bar in record time. It didnt slow me down when I planted a hand near the bikers empty drink and vaulted over the top of the bar.

I landed on the floor in front of Kody, ignoring the shouts and commotion coming from all directions. I waved off the bartender hovering uncertainly behind Kody and quietly asked, Are you okay, Kody?”

The answer was obvious when, instead of biting my head off, her big, bright-green eyes flooded with tears and her shoulders started to shake with silent sobs. Having people burst into tears as I was talking to them, was a pretty common occurrence considering my line of work. Id developed a natural immunity to tears of all kinds. But not to Kodys. Hearing her breath catch and watching her eyelashes get spiky and damp as she struggled to hold the tears back made my heart twist painfully in my chest.

Scot Under the Covers was a fun, quick read that left me dreaming of a Highlander to come and sweep me off my feet!

I was utterly charmed by Aden MacTaggert. He was the perfect combination of bad boy and knight in shining armor. I loved watching him get knocked for a loop by the headstrong Miranda Harris. Aden is used to women falling at his feet but Miranda instantly shoots this sexy Highlander down. She uses her wit and charm to continuously put him in his place. That is until she realizes she needs his particular skills, gambling, to win back control of her life. What ensues is a fun romp through the ton as they entangle the mess that Miranda’s life has become.

I truly enjoyed the storyline and the characters and let’s not forget that super sexy Scottish accent.

I started the series with this book and could easily follow everything that happened. However, I so love this family that I want to go back and read Niall’s story!

Sarina Bowen is the award-winning author of more than thirty contemporary novels. She has hit the USA

Suzanne was born in Southern California sometime in the latter half of the 20th century. In the way that some people are born knowing they want to be astronauts or cellists, Suzanne always knew she wanted to be a writer. Early dreams of becoming a zoologist and writing true stories about her adventures in Africa were crushed, however, after she viewed a television special about the world’s most poisonous snakes; she did NOT want to write about how she’d been bitten and lost a limb to a cobra. Thankfully at the same time the movie “Star Wars” premiered, and she realized that she could make up adventures and write about them, and not be eaten by deadly predators while doing research.

She dabbled in romantic fantasy writing for a year or two after graduating with a degree in English from the University of California, Irvine, until her affection for traditional Regency romances led her to write one for fun. After several encouraging rejections from publishers, she snared the interest of the world’s best and most patient literary agent, who advised her to revise the manuscript. This ultimately led to the publication of her first book, The Black Duke’s Prize, from Avon Books in the Spring of 1995. A second Regency, Angel’s Devil, followed that Fall.

When Avon folded its traditional Regency line, Suzanne was encouraged to try her hand at historical romance. As she remained keenly interested in England’s Regency period, she decided to attempt another manuscript set in that time. Lady Rogue hit the shelves in March of 1997. She wrote a total of 29 books for Avon, including two anthologies and a five-part contemporary series which received a pair of starred reviews from Publishers Weekly. One of those books, Twice the Temptation, was named one of the five best romances of the year by PW in 2007.

In 2002 her well-known love of all things “Star Wars” led to an invitation to appear on the E! channel in the television special “Star Wars: The Force Is Back”, where she discussed the romance in the movie series and ended up with more air time than George Lucas.

Suzanne is known for her humorous characters, sexy bad boys, and whip-sharp, witty dialogue.  She currently resides in Placentia, California with several hundred guppies and various other tropical fish, and handful of very loud, spinach-loving finches. And her collection of action figures and statues from “Star Wars”, “Lord of the Rings”, “X-Men”, and “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Everybody needs some inspiration, after all.

“So why were you having a bad day, anyway?” Ellie asks. “Man trouble?”

“Not exactly. It’s more like a lack of man trouble. I kissed my hot algebra tutor. And I wasn’t supposed to.”

Her big eyes widen. “Which hot algebra tutor? You never said.”

“He doesn’t work at the lab,” I say hastily. “He’s a friend. And he wants to stay that way.”

“Oh.” She looks deflated. “That is a bummer.”

    “Do you have a boyfriend?”

“No.” She makes a face. “It would be nice, though. This year is kind of lonely. My roommate is a total bitch.”

“Oh, I have one of those, too.”

“Yeah?” Ellie’s eyes brighten. “Does yours steal your clothes and then lie about it?”

“Um, no. She wouldn’t want any of my things. We have singles, anyway. Just a common bathroom.”

“Lucky! She must be easier to stand, then.”

“You’d think.” I take a gulp of mint tea.

“My roommate took my brand-new scarf. With the tags still on! And when I called her out on it, she tried to gaslight me.”

“Gaslight?” I feel my cheeks flush like they sometimes do when I don’t understand the idioms that people use.

“You don’t know Gaslight? It’s a movie from the forties.”

“Ingrid Bergman,” says Dylan’s voice. “We haven’t got around to the classics yet.”

I startle, sloshing my tea over my hand. And when I look up, Dylan is right there. Clear brown eyes. Tousled hair. Tight, muscular body that’s clothed in a nice sweater and ripped jeans. A handsome face that I finally kissed.

Pain slices through me. Because I’m never going to get over him. There will never be a day when I look at Dylan and don’t wish for more.

“Can I talk to you for a quick second?” he asks, taking the mug and grabbing a napkin off the table. He wipes the tea off my hand.

“Now is not a good time,” I say quickly. Because I don’t want to cry in the coffee shop in front of my only new friend.

Dylan actually rolls his eyes. “Fifteen seconds, Chass. Give a man a break.”

I’d talk to you.” Ellie raises her hand like a school girl. “Pick me.”

And that’s just what I need—another girl in my life who’s swooning for Dylan. Because that always turns out well.

“Fine. Fifteen seconds.” I jump to my feet. Let’s get this over with.

Dylan takes my arm and tows me gently over toward the bulletin board, where nobody is currently reading the flyers for meditation circles and ski equipment sales.

“Look, I’m sorry,” is his opener. “You’re avoiding me. Not that I blame you. I’m sorry things got so out of control.”

“Which things?” I ask warily. Because I don’t want an apology for fooling around with me.

“Pick one!” Dylan raises his hands. “All the things. I shouldn’t have been so inappropriate.”

“But…” I know Dylan was in a serious state of drunken depression when he kissed me. It’s not like I was expecting to hear those kisses made him as happy as they made me. But would it kill him to be a little less patronizing? “Dylan, I’m not twelve years old. It was just a kiss or two. I don’t think I’ll need a full course of therapy to recover.”

    He blinks. “Okay. Good?”

“So did you really need to drag me over here to apologize a third time? Did you apologize to all the girls you kissed during Spin the Bottle in seventh grade?”

I heard about Spin the Bottle and Seven Minutes in Heaven only last year, by eavesdropping on Debbie and her buddies at another bonfire. I’d been transfixed by their tales of who’d kissed whom over the years and how often.

At thirteen, Spin the Bottle would have sounded like heaven to me. Seven minutes in a closet with a boy? I would have lobbied for eight. I was always the most inappropriate girl in the bunch.

Yet somehow Dylan sees me as some kind of innocent child.

“No. Good point.” He crosses his delicious arms and smiles at me. “You are in a feisty mood today.”

    “Is that so wrong?”

“No.” He shakes his handsome head. “Not at all. Are we going to hug it out?” He opens his big arms wide.

Oh boy. I can’t resist stepping into them. And when he pulls me in, I experience the familiar hormone rush that always happens when I’m close to him. Rapid heartbeat? Check. Goosebumps? Check. My nose lands against his flannel shirt.

My mouth is mere inches from his, of course. But this time he has no interest in kissing me. It takes all my willpower to give him a squeeze and then step back.

“Be well, Chass. I’ll leave you to your tutoring session, even if you’re basically cheating on me right now. But we’re still making caramels this weekend, right? I told Griffin we could use six gallons of goat’s milk. Don’t make a liar out of me.”

“I won’t,” I say quickly. I might be slightly irritated at him, but it will blow over. My capacity to forgive him for not loving me back is basically infinite. “We’ll leave right after Friday classes?”

“You got it. And this is for you. Share it with your friend.” He pulls something out of his pocket. “More market research.”

He puts a little box in my hand and then walks away.

As always, it takes me a second to get over my hormone rush. I stand there blinking for a long moment until I realize Ellie is grinning at me from the sofa. So I go back over to her and sit down.

“Wow…” she says, stealing a glance at Dylan’s retreating backside. “Is that hot hunk of Vermont male your algebra tutor?”

    “Yes.” My voice is gravel.

    “And your future ex-boyfriend?”

“Nope. I’ll never get that chance. He’s my best friend, but…” There’s no tidy explanation.

“But you want more. I would if it were me.”

    I nod, miserable.

I have loved everything that I have read by Sarina Bowen, so when I saw that Heartland was releasing I jumped to read this book.

Now I should preface this by saying I had not read any of the True North books prior to Heartland. I do have a few of them sitting in that unwieldy TBR pile on my kindle… but I had yet to crack one open. I was told this could be read on its own, so I trusted that and dove in to the story. And seriously? I could NOT put this book down! It more than held my interest this entire time — it had me actually craving more of this world. Swiping to that last page I was reluctant to close the book out because I didn’t want to leave this world. So of course, I didn’t! LOL! I jumped into the Hello Goodbye series first and devoured them and am now starting the True North series from the beginning because I just want to live here forever!

I loved both Dylan and Chastity. I loved how protective and sweet Dylan was with Chastity. I loved how Chastity was innocent and sweet yet still ready to tackle a world she was still learning about. She embraced life and was ready to actually live it. And their interactions together were just magical. It is always so much better, sweeter, stronger when you can fall in love with your best friend.

Heartland was a sweet, sexy, romantic friends to lovers tale that will leave you feeling all swoony! You definitely want to pick this up!

The Arrangement was three steamy reads that let you escape today and travel back to a time when marriages were arranged for convenience and love was an after thought.

I love reading arranged marriage stories. Stories where the couple is matched out of need (not the nice passion kind of need), where they don’t think this will be anything other than a business arrangement and then they find themselves tumbling head over heels in love. The arrangement of the each of the three marriages in this book happens for a different reason and how the couple falls in love is also unique to each story. This helped keep each story fresh and entertaining.

All three of these tales by Sylvia Day, Minerva Spencer and Kristin Vayden captured my attention, had me breaking out a fan and left me with that great feeling of romance and love found. The Arrangement left me clamoring for more books from each of these three talented writers!
