Here’s an excerpt to give you a peek at Mindy’s involvement in Mike and Summer’s relationship.
She reaches up and starts twirling her hair into a messy bun. “How’s that? Does it look like I’ve been fooling around for the past hour?”
I nod. “Without a doubt.”
Her eyes widen.
“Relax. It will only make people jealous.” I reach for my phone. “I promised to have dinner with Mindy. We can all walk to the Student Union together.”
“Is she going to assume we . . . ”
“Oh yeah. Feel free to set her straight on what actually happened, though.” I hold my finger up when Mindy picks up the other line. “Hey, ready to eat?”
“Worked up an appetite, huh?” Mindy asks. “Glad to see things are still okay between you and Summer.”
“Thanks. Meet you in the lobby.” I hang up, and Summer gives me an expectant glare.
“Well?”
“Yup, she thinks we worked up an appetite.” I smile and wag my eyebrows.
She covers her face. “Oh, someone kill me now.”
I remove her hands from her face and give her a reassuring smile. “It’s only Mindy. No need to worry. I’ll set her straight.”
Summer’s face flushes. “You wouldn’t tell her what we did, would you?”
“Not in detail.” I shrug and start for the door.
“You’re kidding, right?”
“Totally. Mindy always says I give way too many details.”
Summer freezes, so I place my hand on her back and gently push her through the door. Then I lean in and whisper, “You’re cute when you’re freaking out.”
She turns and smacks my chest. “You’re awful. You know that, right?”
“Yeah, I do. Proud of it, too.”
Mindy is already in the lobby when we get there. She takes in Summer’s appearance and shakes her head at me. “Do not corrupt this poor girl.”
I hold my hands up. “I did nothing of the sort.”
“Yeah, right. And I didn’t have phone sex in your bed.”
“What?” She wouldn’t.
“Guess you’ll never know.” Mindy laughs and loops her arm through Summer’s. I’ve taught that girl too well. She can bluff like the best of them now. At least I think she’s bluffing.
