About THE SCIENCE OF ATTRACTION:
Kate Ramsey is at the top of her game.
She’s the hot new recruit at the most prestigious research institute in Germany, and she’s determined to live up to the hype — even if it means working day and night. Stress relief comes in the form of a no-nonsense affair with her neighbor, who also happens to be the director of the institute. Who says sex should be anything more than a contract between two people who have other things on their mind?
So when Tom Baker saunters into her life, Kate is understandably upset to see this well-oiled machine splutter and seize. Tom is young and smart, and far too pretty for his own good. Kate can’t help but be drawn to him, even if giving in to the attraction would mean risking everything she’s worked for.

Villa
The hotel was arranged in a series of villas, each housing a dozen or so rooms. I managed to find mine, all the way on the far side of the resort, and stopped for a moment to admire the vivid bougainvillea stretching itself across the entrance.
I wriggled a little in my dress, relishing the thin layer of sweat cocooning my body, but looking forward to a nice cool shower once I’d located my room. I dragged my suitcase up the last few steps toward the villa and plowed shoulder first into a near-naked Tom.
“Want some help with that?” he said, as I struggled to recover from the sensation of his skin on mine.
I took a step back to collect myself, and let my eyes wander over the incredible planes of his chest, down the trail of hair bisecting his abdomen, to the swimming trunks hanging from his hips.
Sweet baby Jesus.
“Um, no,” I stammered, “I’m fine, thanks.”
He closed the space between us again, gripping my elbows and moving his chest up against mine to lean in and kiss my cheek.
“It’s good to see you,” he said.
Did we leave all the rules in Bonn? I wondered with a start.
Somehow the lazy heat and salty air were blurring the lines of what constituted an appropriate working relationship. I reflected for a moment on whether or not I cared, and resolved to tread with at least a little caution.
“You too,” I chirped, moving out of his embrace. “Going swimming?” I asked, nodding toward the towel slung over his shoulder.
“Yep,” he said, apparently unperturbed by my awkwardness. “Tek and I thought we’d check out the beach before the masses descend. Wanna come?”
Yes. Yes. Yes—
“No,” I said, shaking my head. “I have a date with a Canadian and a glass of rosé.”
“Mmm, that sounds pretty good. I might have to get in on some of that action myself.”
“Well, you’re very welcome to join us,” I offered. But put some goddamn clothes on before you do, I thought but didn’t say.
“You sure you don’t want to come for a swim beforehand?”
“No, I’m good.” I breathed in and stood firm, ignoring as best I could the taut swell of his muscles.
“Tomorrow then,” he declared plainly, giving me a look that hovered somewhere between a promise and a dare, before breezing past me and sauntering down the pebbled path.
